OH DEAR GOD

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-09-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't tell me Sleepy Fucking Hollow is turning into an SJW-heavy fandom. Or even that it has a fandom. I mean I really have no problem with it but I was interested in a series set in New York State only to realize it isn't just freaky stuff happening in Sleepy Hollow in a Twin Peaks style situation, it's fucking LITERALLY ICHABOD CRANE FOR SOME REASON

What are the annoying fans going to do? How fucking literary are we getting here? Ship Ichabod with Rip Van Winkle? Then accuse Natty Bumppo
of cultural appropriation, angering all BumpBod shippers? Complain about the continued slut shaming of Hester Prynne?

New York has plenty of series set in it.

Not New York outside NYC. Sleepy Hollow is pretty far downstate but it isn't the city.

Honestly NYC is so different it may as well not be part of the state. I remember being fucking thrilled that my home city got mentioned on X-Files once.

Go ahead--but what movie are you talking about?

You'd best not mean Snow Day, that wasn't a bad movie.

As someone from Western NY, I'm totally with you on this. NYC is not at all similar with the rest of the state.

WHY?

I mean...

Western NY is awesome. Especially if you like copious amounts of snow. :P

Actually, I do like it. It's big enough for things like museums and sports teams, but small enough that I don't feel overwhelmed.

How much snow do you get? We typically get 10 feet or so. The first year I moved up here, we had about 11 feet of snow.

I don't know if this counts as SJW-related, but I've seen posts about how Abbie and Ichabod shouldn't fall in love because we need more male/female relationships that aren't romantic, and people are acting like a woman loses what makes her strong the moment she has romantic feelings for a man.

Personally, I'd like to see them become more than friends (because I'm a sucker for romance). Providing the writers don't drop the ball, Abbie isn't going to lose who she is the moment she falls in love. Contrary to popular belief she can be a strong character and have a relationship at the same time. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

My one problem with hooking up the main characters is that it happens so often--it'd be nice to see a man and a woman protagonist in a drama actually staying friends. I shipped Mulder and Scully (though I didn't call it that back then) but the show really lost something when they actually got together.

But I don't think the character would lose a thing. The STORY would. Granted I'm talking about tv in general, I haven't seen this show.

That's my problem, too, the prevalence. Such relationships are generally formulaic and very predictable on TV. So if half the story's the romance/UST between the two leads and I know how that's going to go based on having seen it tons of times on other shows, then unless the other half of the story is spectacular (and given that it looks like it's basically a cop show with a dash of fish-out-of-water that's unlikely), I don't see why I should bother.

At this point, unless I'm in the market for a romance story, I don't even bother watching guy-girl lead shows anymore because I know that's what it's going to end up being.

You know, though, in XF, the show lost something before Mulder and Scully got together and by the time they explicitly got together it was in such a weird, not really real way that it was totally off putting, even to shippers like myself. Ugh, that was such a fucking fumble on CC's part.

I'm just excited that there is potential for a black woman/white man pairing. We are so underrepresented, it's ridiculous. :(

acting like a woman loses what makes her strong the moment she has romantic feelings for a man

That's kind of what it means in television, though. It's more a symptom of bad writing than anything intrinsic to relationships, but characterization tends to go to the dogs once the "will they/won't they" issue is resolved.
