I suspect that some American fans think that Doctor Who and Sherlock must be joined by the hip, just because they're both on BBC America. I say that as an American, mind you.

Except that Sherlock isn't on BBC America. It has never been on BBC America. I kind of wish it were, because even if we got commercials, they'd probably show it closer to it's original British broadcast and not trim a few minutes each episode to add an introduction with Alan Cumming. Sorry to go off on you, but I'm tired of reading this all the time. Sherlock is shown in the US on PBS as part of the Masterpiece Mystery line. They co-produce it.

Sorry! I wasn't lucky enough to have BBCA the last time Sherlock aired. (And I still only have it in SD. Damn cable companies.) Actually, I am sorry... I guess I'll have to hope that iTunes or something carries it, so I don't have to wait for the sanitized PBS version. Bleah.

My point still stands for the most part -- both are British productions, so they're going to be joined at the hip for most Americans.

(I can't help wonder if it's because or in spite of my growing up on a steady diet of Monty Python, that I don't conflate all things British.)
