I killed a mouse, and it's silly, but I feel irrationally sad and guilty about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My house has mice, and it's annoying because they destroy things and get into my food, which I then have to toss. I've caught one, and released it in a nearby park. Yesterday I caught another, but I must have squished it, or it got a heart attack - I dunno, in any case, RIP mouse.

I feel so bad about it, especially as it was pretty cute and it still moved when I caught it. I feel a bit of a hypocrite, as I'm not vegetarian or whatever and I pretty much eat dead animals daily. But there's something about this one that bugs me. Maybe because it was unintentional, and because the death was pointless. Oh well :(

Get some peppermint essential oil and scatter drops of it all around the house. That'll keep the little buggers out.

Don't practice catch and release unless you are taking it five miles or more away otherwise it'll probably be back home before you are.

Thank you! I didn't know that!. That's a great tip. Is that an essential oil?

Essential if you've got mice! Peppermint oil makes their noses feel like they've caught fire, so they keep well clear.

If you do need to trap mice though, remember an old fashioned snap trap is pretty much an instant death and you've given them a fine last meal to go out on.

Yeah, it's hard when you're the one at least partially responsible, even if it was completely unintentional. Sorry you weren't able to return the guy to park.

Don't feel irrationally guilty about things you don't need to feel guilty about? I guess? I don't know what to tell you.

Mice are very squishy and if you pinch them just a little, their backs break and they die. I have squished countless as they used to steal oat from sacks intended for our horses. When they constantly jump at you and also poop in the grain, you end up ending as many of them as you can - and a sturdy pair of gloves is all you need to do it safely. They're pests, don't feel bad. They'd eat YOU without a second thought if they got the chance.

MTE. Not about to shed any bitter tears for a mouse--I can't believe, now, that there was once a time when I thought they were cute. Luckily my cat makes short work of them.

I see why you feel bad, but I have to agree that you shouldn't -- you didn't even mean to kill it and having lived in place where rats visited I know having rodents get in your food is gross.

(I once found a nibbled-on Hershey's kiss in the middle of my bed. My fault for keeping food in the bedroom, but ick.)

Honestly, if you've got mice in your house, get some traps, bait with peanut butter and kill 'em. They're filthy, diseased creatures who piss and poop on everything. You *do not* want them all over your food, plates, clothing, soap, whatever. The one i had to trap ate my damn tampons. WTF.

I understand feeling guilty about it, but the traps kill in a second and nobody needs the Hantavirus.

I know how you feel; I found a mouse in my room once, and I let it be for a few days before I thought it was adorable and I named it and everything. Then i realized it was kind of unsanitary... so when I went home, I told the front desk about it and they set up a mouse trap. I felt terrible for that entire week at home when I got back I rushed to my room to make sure the mousetrap was empty but... nope, my little mouse was dead. :( I had to get the guys to come up and clear him and I felt shitty all day.

I'm very soft-hearted myself, so I know how you feel. This morning I helped a huge ugly beetle turn itself over because it looked so miserable laying on its back with its legs wiggling around. I don't even like beetles, but I can't stand to see anything suffer.

It was an accident. You shouldn't feel so guilty. You were trying to release it outside so it wasn't like you did it maliciously. Don't be so hard on yourself.

I know how you feel, OP. Adding on to the peppermint oil suggestion, a sprinkle of cayenne might help keep them away as well- we use that to deter squirrels destroying our potted herbs around here.

Since I've had pet rats (one of the best pets ever, tbh), mice to me just... aren't "vermin." Granted, I don't even slap mosquitoes, but I could never kill a mouse. I did catch and release and felt a bit better about myself - it's a cheap trap, and get them a ways away from your place.

Where I live, the "mouse-season" is starting now. We've put down the traps, secured the food, and are grateful that they usually don't come inside the actual house.

The "mice are cute" vs "mice are pest" is a real dilemma though.

Although I don't think this should anything to do with you eating meat or not, being hypocrite or not. Most of the people have a line in regard to how comfortable are they with killing animals. You have find one of your lines I think.

Completely unnecessary and useless anecdotes/examples below:

(My mother can make delicious dishes from rabbit, but can't make herself to actually eat them. I once got nausea when I faced with the products made of horse-meat in a market. I cook, but the few times I had to actually cut the neck of the duck or chicken, I felt like shit, and it's a complete idiotic thing on itself, in spite of my (usually) strong affection towards birds. My childhood best friend's father was a hunter. My best friend saves every bug or insect she can and refuse to use chemicals to get rid of them, she tries every natural, not-really-harmful diversive tactic she can. My other friend is vegetarian and she and her boyfriend raise their daughter to respect even the plants. And so on, and so on, and so on...)

I think it's natural to feel a bit of a "shock" when killing an animal accidently. Especially with one so little, I don't know - it seems unfair? Like we use our strength and size irresponsibly.

BUT I agree with nonny that they're a health hazard and stealing food doesn't fly in the animal kingdom either. We need to protect our turf.
