Fandom is racist. It can't help itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
That is a huge problem with a lot of fandoms. The racism is rampant, but everyone complains about how "we're not all like that!" and "they just don't go well together imo." It's crazy watching people dive bomb around canon sources that ship a thing, but fandom freaks out and refuses to ship a thing, because of skin color. I'm not sure which is worse, fandom's overall dismissal to out-right hatred of characters of color or female characters. It's pretty close either way, I suppose.

I honestly think it has more to do with the racism in the industry - the writers and casting etc - so that for the most part people of color and women don't get the roles or the writing that the white men will. So it's this whole cycle where people ship the best written roles which just happen to be white men most of the time.

And then yeah, some of it is just rampant racism. But I think it's a lot more complicated than "fandom is racist".

I think I agree with this. I mean, the idea is basically epitomized by Derek's three pack members. Of all the ones who could have gotten a complex history and interesting characterization, only the white male wolf, Isaac, comes out on top in every way? It's not like his actor was more mind-blowing than Erica's and Boyd's, so there's only one explanation I can think of for why one of them couldn't have gotten decent backstory and story arcs over Isaac.

New anon here.

Yup. And then which of the Alpha pack got relationships and allowed to live? White dudes. That show tries to be all "look at all the POC and women!" and then at the end of every season it's just white dudes everywhere.

If you're talking about the TV show Scrubs I went over to fanfiction.net and filtered "Character A - Turk, Character B - JD, M-rated" - there were zero results

People don't ship Turk/JD or Turk/Carla/JD? o_O

I was never in this fandom but ... what why. Who is the flagship then?

Cox/JD, as far as I can tell. Exactly like in Psych fandom, Shawn/Gus gets pushed aside in favor of Shawn/Lassiter. (Disclaimer: I'm not in the Psych fandom either, and I *know* there are Gus/Shawn stories out there (good stories even), but they're hard to find under that overwhelming amount of Shawn/Lassiter.)

Hey! Shawn/Lassiter shipper here. Personaly I don't find black dudes hot. I also don't ship #best friens since childhood, like, ever. Frenemies is much more my thing.

Also there's a popular pairing Morgan/Reid from one of detective shows.

"Personaly I don't find black dudes hot"

lol and you think that has nothing to do with racism?

NAYRT

I'm on the fence about things like this. I myself am a (pansexual) black woman, but it's very, very rare for me to find black men physically attractive. The majority of the ones I find attractive have VERY specific facial features: chiseled jaw, square chin, flawless complexion (of any shade), almond-shaped eyes, full, pouty lips, sculpted eyebrows. I don't really care much about facial hair as long as those facial features are there- depending on the person, facial hair makes or breaks the look for me. What ends up happening is that the black men I find attractive tend to be androfemme, if that makes any sense? I don't find rugged black men attractive at all, only the pretty ones and pretty black men are very difficult to come by because there is a stigma about being pretty and black if you are male. It ties into that whole blacks and homosexuality/homophobia mess that's still very prevalent in our community. I don't believe my attraction is internalized racism or anything of the like, but I know that there just isn't enough variety to really spark my interest. After a while, all of the black men look the same and it's not sexy. I want something different.

Are you serious? It's just taste. Someone likes dark hair, someone light... It's a type.
Gay men don't find girls attractive - ergo they're misogynist! *insert sarcasm here*

A reason for that might also be that the older fic (anything before the character filters were installed) don't have those character filters yet and thus, don't show up.

But don't comedies have like, zero fandom? ...Then again, I just read a long Annie/Abed/Troy fic...

Dude, seriously. Shows are different and their fandoms are necessarily different. You ship some pairings and not others for various reasons, so there are some biracial ships I don't ship and others I do. Likewise, there are some female characters I love, some I don't respond well to. It's extremely jaded to assume the worst of people with no evidence to support the assumption.
