Anyone here ever done a package swap with someone from Japan?

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-09-25 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
hey all. my best friend is living in japan right now and we want to send each other packages between countries (I'm in america). I asked her what kind of stuff she wanted and she said "sweets," but after a few different attempts to get more specific requests (her english isn't the greatest of all time, plus she's not that focused of a person anyway), I've given up trying to get out of her what kind of sweets you can't get in japan. I know I've heard of people around the internet swapping packages with foreigners, so I wondered if anyone here knew any kind of candy/junk food that can't be purchased in japan but can in america? any links to such lists would be appreciated too if you've ever come across one; a few internet searches got me nothing.

alternately, I think I remembered a couple people here saying they had spent time in japan--do any of you have any suggestions? thank you!

Is she American or Japanese? There was one glorious year when Seiyu was selling Reese's peanut butter cups, but they didn't catch on, so now they are gone. (Seiyu is now owned by Wal Mart, so they have quite a lot of American junk food.) Twix, Snickers, and Kit Kats can be found in almost every conbini and Yamaya has Bounty Bars. Even when I lived in Aomori (middle of nowhere), good peanut butter was the only thing I had trouble finding. Cheese flavoured products in Japan are terrible, so if she like Cheez-its (or similar items) you could send those.

Japan does not get the pumpkin products, so maybe some instant pumpkin spice from Starbucks or pumpkin bars.

Hrm. I'm in Japan right now but I don't eat sweets, so I really wouldn't know. I'll try to think of something/ask a friend who does, though!

Okay, so my American friend tells me you can't get Reese's peanut butter cups in Japan.

Maybe some seasonal stuff? Starburst candy corn, Cadbury slime eggs, coconut rocher, those taffy like candies with the peanut butter inside, etcetc

I live in Korea right now, and I can't get Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, or butterscotch, or flavored tootsie rolls, or candy corn, or pecan divinity, or soft cookies (they're all hard), or girl scout cookies (not even the off-brand knock-offs).

I have my students 'space ice cream' and they went APESHIT, but that's hard to find even in the states. I got lucky cause my mom lives right near Space Camp

Other people have already suggested stuff with peanut butter and seasonal candies. I'd avoid the more obvious candy bars (Japan has Kit-Kats in so many flavors, most of them aren't even sold in the U.S.) like what you'd find in a vending machine, but Halloween is coming up and it's a great opportunity to get assortments of stuff so she can get a wider sampling.
