I think its more expectations than anything else tbh

Watching it before it aired there was lots of Mako-hype being pushed by the creators at different panels and events and the fans ran with it. That he'd be so great, so complex, so witty, so lovely, so swoon-worthy. The fans decided him/Korra would be Zutara 2: The Canoning. And the first couple set up episodes kind of seemed like he could maybe live up to it but as the show went on it became increasingly clear that he was no where near the hype version of him.

So if you go in knowing people hate him, he seems fine. If you go in Expecting Zuko-But-Sexier-and-Funnier-and-Sweeter-and-Everything-Betterer then its just not so good! The creators still somewhat seem to think that's how we're supposed to be seeing him, which is sad because if they actually did more of him not being able to be intentionally funny and being awkward and sometimes kind of an asshole in his awkwardness, I think he'd attract a big fanbase. He's just too much of a Creator's Pet right now. Stay away from the creator and fan commentary and you should be able to continue to enjoy him, though!
