So I FINALLY got around to watching Legend of Korra and I just finished Book 1 today and uh... I don't get why everyone hated Mako so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never gotten it either.

For me it's his constant disingenuousness, coupled the fact that he's the boringest bore to ever bore.

The narrative expects us to really like him, but gives us no actual reason to do so.

What do you mean by his disingenuousness?

[personal profile] pts 2013-09-25 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly w/r/t his love life. But for me it's really more about how boring he his.

Thinking he's boring is fair enough.

I just feel like wrt his love life, it was never malicious. I got the impression that Mako was in denial of his feelings for Korra for a long time and that was the cause of a lot of the problems. Because he was telling himself that he was just feeling friendship feelings when clearly that wasn't the case which wasn't fair to Asami, but yeah. I don't think it was intentional or malicious.

I also think his fooling around with Korra when Bolin was trying to date her set off some people's infidelity squick, though I just sort of rolled my eyes at that.

It doesn't matter that it wasn't malicious. He still two-timed and basically got away with it and the narrative does NOT paint what he did as not okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically his romance plot with Korra took away a lot of time from other more interesting things that could have happened on the show and was poorly written. All of this coupled with the fact that the show never really bothered to make him interesting.
I mean think about it: why would a character that fandom would normally go crazy for be hated so much?

See, he's a teenage guy who acts like a teenage guy

BUT SEE THAT'S HORRIBLE because most fans of Korra (just by virtue of what it is) really never got over being teenagers or are teenagers themselves. So dumping a girl you've been dating for all of a month is the worst thing you can do, her life is ruined.

Also part of it is Bolin is like clearly better

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
If he had actually dumped her, I think people woulda been hella less peeved. :P

They were dating several weeks at most. He kissed another girl.

That's pretty standard teenager.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
you make it sound like teenagers aren't unlikeable assholes. like acting like a teenager does make something not assholish. it's weird.

Remember when I said a lot of Korra fans are either teenagers or never got over being teenagers?

Tell me about how miserable lunch was.

It's the fact that his character was boring, was shoved into scenes where he wasn't needed(Korra's final standoff with Amon /AHEM), and did a lot of unlikeable and selfish things- yet the creators of the show are constantly trying to push him off as the greatest thing since sliced bread/Zuko 2.0/romantic hero and are offended that anyone dare say otherwise.
Basically I feel like his character was just one part of the weak and inconsistent writing that became a problem in the show. I still loved the show mind you, but yeah.

I mean was Katara there when Aang had to face off Fire Lord Ozai? No. But of course, let's just put Mako right into Korra's final scene with Amon, and have Amon unnecessarily gush over Mako's prodigal firebending skills while we're at it /eyeroll

MAKO!! /angrily shakes fist at sky

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
One of my biggest issues is that it usually comes down to Bolin. Poor Bolin, etc. Korra never had romantic feelings for him. Mako kissing Korra back after -she initiated- is not the worst thing ever.

Also, when Korra was accusing Asami's father of being evil, who did Mako side with? Asami. Who did Korra tell Mako he should be with, after what happened? Asami. Mako's feelings for Korra were really strong, stronger than Asami's. That made him get way too over-protective in nine, but it's not like Mako had been trying to get with Korra up until that point.

I think Mako is hated way more than he deserves, really.

mostly because he gets in the way of korra and i being together

On a genuinely serious note, his relationship-drama-triangle with Korra and Asami got in the way of the epic sismance between the two that I thought was going to happen. Still bitter over that

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping we'll get more of it later in the season. Given the creators' decent-ish treatment of female friendships in the original series, I will be seeeeeeeriously disappointed if Asami and Korra don't get some sweet lady bonding.

korra and asami yes. i would be here for that. i would RSVP. i would show up early and i would make a cake and everyone would eat it and be happy.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
He never actually broke up with Asami. He does no wrong! We must love him! Bend the plot to him.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
For me? I didn't exactly hate him...but I *did*hate the way he treated Asami - particularly when she expressed how upset she was at the way he was, basically, ignoring her in favor of Korra [after having found her]. It just came across very "You're just being emotional!" and dismissive of her feelings which isn't cool in a relationship. Plus, you know...never sitting down with either Korra or Asami to figure it out.

...And yeah. I'll admit, the whole kiss thing *did* hit my cheating squick hard - but that's towards both him and Korra. So.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have disliked Mako as strongly if I didn't have the feeling I was expected to like him. His communication with Asami was .... well.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think its more expectations than anything else tbh

Watching it before it aired there was lots of Mako-hype being pushed by the creators at different panels and events and the fans ran with it. That he'd be so great, so complex, so witty, so lovely, so swoon-worthy. The fans decided him/Korra would be Zutara 2: The Canoning. And the first couple set up episodes kind of seemed like he could maybe live up to it but as the show went on it became increasingly clear that he was no where near the hype version of him.

So if you go in knowing people hate him, he seems fine. If you go in Expecting Zuko-But-Sexier-and-Funnier-and-Sweeter-and-Everything-Betterer then its just not so good! The creators still somewhat seem to think that's how we're supposed to be seeing him, which is sad because if they actually did more of him not being able to be intentionally funny and being awkward and sometimes kind of an asshole in his awkwardness, I think he'd attract a big fanbase. He's just too much of a Creator's Pet right now. Stay away from the creator and fan commentary and you should be able to continue to enjoy him, though!
