For me it's his constant disingenuousness, coupled the fact that he's the boringest bore to ever bore.

The narrative expects us to really like him, but gives us no actual reason to do so.

What do you mean by his disingenuousness?

Mostly w/r/t his love life. But for me it's really more about how boring he his.

Thinking he's boring is fair enough.

I just feel like wrt his love life, it was never malicious. I got the impression that Mako was in denial of his feelings for Korra for a long time and that was the cause of a lot of the problems. Because he was telling himself that he was just feeling friendship feelings when clearly that wasn't the case which wasn't fair to Asami, but yeah. I don't think it was intentional or malicious.

I also think his fooling around with Korra when Bolin was trying to date her set off some people's infidelity squick, though I just sort of rolled my eyes at that.

Well Korra was the one who kissed him in that circumstance. lol. Although that entire episode was kind of a disaster so I try to pretend it didn't happen.

YOU ARE CORRECT. Consider that particular complaint retracted.

He very clearly kissed her back, though. That's what people had an issue with on his part, not just that he was kissed.

Yeah, but idk. It still doesn't seem like that big of a deal to mean. Korra kissed Mako and at first he was like "whoa!" but then he relaxed into it which idk. Probably ties back into those feelings he had for Korra that he was in denial about.

And like idk. He and Asami had been dating for like 2 weeks when that happened. It's not like they were in a super committed relationship.

So while it wasn't a good thing, I also don't see it as this horrible thing that Mako can never recover from.

To be fair, a chunk of the fandom (from what I've seen) was more peeved at Mako because he never just sat down at talked to either Asami or Korra to figure that whole triangle out till the blow out at the end. It was his wish-washiness that was annoying and it was most annoying that the show didn't treat it like a flaw. The same with Korra, who never really thought of Asami's feelings when she went after Mako, and this wasn't treated as a flaw either.

That's a much better way of articulating it.

It doesn't matter that it wasn't malicious. He still two-timed and basically got away with it and the narrative does NOT paint what he did as not okay.
