So I FINALLY got around to watching Legend of Korra and I just finished Book 1 today and uh... I don't get why everyone hated Mako so much.

Did we watch the same episodes? I gave up on Korra fullstop when I saw the treatment of Bolin hadn't changed since the latter half of the first.

I agree that Mako was demonized way too much, but as for Eska? Reverse her gender and Bolin's. What does "his" towards "her" behavior seem like now?

I think it's just because they don't particularly like her. She's just super dominant, and I find it kind of adorable they're getting away with writing her the way they are.

This is a troll, isn't it? I haven't watched the third episode yet, but the second one had Eska not allowing Bolin to hug his friend just because that friend is a woman. How is that not abusive? If Bolin was the girl and Eska the boy, people would be calling Eska the new Edward Cullen.

I can't tell if this is a troll, but I really hope you are. I love Eska as a character but she is creepy, and very abusive to Bolin.

You see it's hard because on one hand, the way Eska treats Bolin is bad and I'm pretty sure the show knows that, but on the other hand this fandom is one of the most hysterical baby butthurt fandoms ever so I can see why you're annoyed. If I were in middle school I'd use the phrase "pee-pee hearted" but I'm not so I'll only imply it.

Hey did you guys know that Bolin not wanting to fuck Desna upon finding out he's a guy is homophobic. Did you. Don't fucking lie to me.

What....Mako denied his feelings for Korra and acted stupidly because of it. Eska purposefully makes Bolin her butler for her and her brother. The way Eska treats Bolin is miles worse than Mako kissing Korra back when she kissed him.

To me, Eska is a clingy teenager who,

1. Has never been told "no" to
2. Also does not understand boundaries

Mako was kind of stringing both girls along but he didn't do anything irredeemable. He was being a teenager but the show is trying to make us love him so much when I just find him boring.

Pretty sure Eska and Desna are seriously lacking social skills. Boeksa is played for laughs, the show isn't glamorizing their relationship.

She is creepy and it isn't even funny. Like, I'm pretty sure that if she tried to kiss Bolin or something, Desna would be watching the whole time.

They were pretty funny in the first episodes tho. That hiss they give Bolin when he first approaches them and Eska's lines slay me. But the third episode it's kinda like... it'd be funny if Bolin didn't feel so trapped? I dunno, I'm just tired of him being the chew toy.

It's not ~demonizing~ if the character is canonically a consequence-free asshole like Mako is.

But Eska is abusive. And possibly slightly evil, but the story hasn't gotten that far yet. Mako could be annoying, and he and Korra were total jerks to Asami, but he was never abusive.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you hadn't seen episode 3 at the time of this secret.

Because in episodes 1 and 2? Weirdly adorable. She has all the social skills of Azula and she brought her brother along for everything BUT she was funny and she comforted Bolin when he was scared.

But in episode 3 she makes him pull her and her brother in a rickshaw thing, which is not romantic or thoughtful. That's ship sinking material, not funny or cute but kind of mean because Bolin looked all tired and scared. BUT THEN she says he's coming with her to the NWT! She didn't even ask him, she's known him all of a week and she's making huge decisions for him? Decisions that take him away from family, friends, and any possible support structure? Red Fucking Flag, man.

It could be the social skills. She could get a ton of character development, grow, and learn to treat Bolin like a person. (I hope she does, I like her kind of crazy and I think Bolin would be happy with a really dominant chick.) She might "win Bolin back" once he works up the courage to break up with her. But I'm not really hopeful and right now the relationship looks really sketchy.

...See, I can see how it'd be viewed as abusive since her actions *do* hit some red flags, imo, and Bolin does mention that she threatened him when he tried to break up with her.

For all I can see why people don't like Mako, you can't really go down the abusive!Mako route without screwing the characters you theoretically do like. *glares at one fic in particular*

It *is* abusive. If this were a guy and he was that controlling over a girl? Everybody would be bouncing up to complain so hard it'd be like whack-a-mole getting them all to sit down again.
