I love River's character from Firefly, and don't understand why everyone hates her.

Everyone hates her? I never really engaged with the fandom but I was under the vague impression that the fans loved her.

...Although the same could be said for my vague impressions of every other Firefly character, so that may not be as superlative as it initially felt.

Apparently people hate Kaylee too? There was secret a while back about someone loving Kaylee despite the fact their everyone hates her. I thought everyone loved everyone on Firefly.

I've seen some frigging weird opinions about Kaylee, though. One time I came across this weird mini-essay where this one woman was going off about how girls who are tomboyish/have jobs normally associated with men are never portrayed as casually feminine, and are basically dudes until they get a chance to wear something over-the-top girly. Or something. :/ I didn't really know what they were getting at, but whatever it was, it wasn't even accurate. Casually girly is pretty much how I'd describe her! And I always thought it was cool that for once a mechanic girl was depicted like that.

I hate Kaylee, but that's because "geniuses who never actually do anything smart" is an annoying character type. :|

What do you mean, never actually do anything smart? She constantly fixes Serenity and keeps her flying.

Not when it seems to matter. The only time her brilliance really comes up is in the pilot, and after that it's forever complaining that she doesn't have the parts.

Well, that an disarming a reaper booby trap (Bushwacked), quickly identifying broken engine parts (twice in one episode, Out of Gas), building a working ambulance from junk (Ariel), and reprogramming a trash drone while perched on top of the ship while it was flying (Trash).

I think it's one of those things where Firefly is popular enough that there's been a million Internet Hype Cycles and it's gone from "River is super awesome" to "Oh god all these nerds are hyping River, she's not that awesome, stop being annoying" to "River is awful and boring (because I am overreacting to the previous hype" to "River is awesome" and through all those various places a whole bunch of times.

Because that's the Internet.

Hates her? Everyone I've encountered outside of F!S practically worships her. Try TV Tropes.

Yeah, she's popular in a lot of places. I liked her too.

I hate her because Joss whedon worships her. His creepy obsession with her feet, and the fact that she's treat like a good little girl by fandom for willingly debasing herself of him.

Because she is Joss Whedon's sex fantasy. Its just icky.

Joss Whedon has made no secret that he has a sexual fetish for waiflike women, preferably who look really young and act innocent, who have superstrength. He also likes women to not wear shoes and has asked female interviewers to remove shoes in his presence (allegedly). You gotta ask, what are all River's defining characteristics, and how well do they match up with Whedon's self-admitted fetishes?

I think she's neat!

And you encounter hate, but it generally seems like most people like her.

Liking Jayne seems a bit more controversial... I personally really dig him.

Jayne is probably my favorite character, but I'll admit to a dual bias of "there's this one fic series I really like" and a Chuck-inspired retroactive love for Adam Baldwin.
