Thanks to secret #4. Has anyone else read something in fanfic that just surprised the shit out of you/ you didn't see coming?

I was reading this fanfic once and surprise, there's bestiality in the next chapter.

I find surprise mpreg every time I read LOTR fic, usually around chapter 57 of 90.

There was one NuBSG fic that contained surprise European Union bashing in it. Just seemed pretty out of the blue, and more than a little racist too.

I once read a sci-fi Sentinel AU set at some point in the future which suddenly started talking about how much better off Russia and China were under emperors.

I'm sure there have been kinky ones that I've blocked out... The only one I can think of is a story that was marked "character death" and completely faked me out in regards to which character and when. I don't even normally read warnings, but I was a mess.

Oh gosh, I had this happen to me, and if I hadn't accidentally glanced at a rather spoilery review beforehand I would have been an utter wreck.

Mine was bestiality too.

I can't remember what the fandom was (it wasn't one I'm familiar with, but my best friend kept telling me how wonderful it was so I read it to shut her up) but it was about a teenage boy who was kidnapped by an older guy, who held him captive and made him have sex with dogs. The older guy also sexually abused and tortured him, I think, and at the very end he gets away but for some reason decides not to go home to his family and goes back to his abuser and decides that he loves him. And the abuser is suddenly "not a bad guy" and they live happily ever after.

It made me so fucking angry.

..uh did you have a talk with your friend after. Because my first thought would be to go to them and be like "what the fuck?"

(granted I'd also be sick to my stomach with panic to confront them in the first place because I have some silly fear of people I know closely being mad at me)

But seriously though wuuuuuut. (also if they replied to my disgust by accusing me of being a homophobe I'd NOPE out of there like a bat outta hell)

I READ A FIC WHAT CLEARLY SAID CHARLES/ERIK. It ended with Charles being alone and Erik going to give his ex-wife an extra shot "for the kids". Ex-wife was only mentioned once in the stories and was not in the pairings or character list. I am angry about that to this day.

Ahaha, that sounds awful.

Somewhat related complaint: I can't tell how many times I have started to read a fic that's been tagged only A/B, but includes A/C, B/D, A/OC etc., and A/B is merely at the very end. Nowadays I quit reading fics at the first sign of untagged pairings due to the time I've wasted on these fics before.

I once ran into unexpected cannibalism. It's funny to think about now. It wasn't then.

The most horrific fanfic "surprise" was not only cannibalism, but cannibalism resulting from totally not warned-for character-death, which happened in the middle of a sex scene which suddenly turned to also-not-warned-for non-non-consensual sadism.

totally unexpected, sudden crossover-character take-over. completely unmarked. all of a sudden, BAM! fantasy characters all over my gritty crime-solvin' fandom. and the answer to the murders was BAM! surprise crossover with something ELSE aliens.
First, I was confused, because I didn't know the source for the fantasy fandom so I didn't immediately recognize the sudden influx of "so many OCs"; then, I read out of horrified fascination with the trainwreck.
towards the end, it was serious wtf-ery. oddly, everyone from the original fandom stayed totally in character.

Mpreg. It was in the warnings, but I never read warnings. It was a nice surprise in this case, though I'm not typically in to mpreg.

SuuurPRISE! Suddenly, this fic which has up to now been plot-driven and character-exploring, suddenly devotes a huge chapter to ... tatoos. Whether character a should get one or not, what design, which artist, etc, etc, etc, on and on and on... graphic description of the process, and then all of a sudden right back to your regularly scheduled plot. The whole interval had zero bearing on anything else, and the resulting (... baffling ) tatoo was never mentioned again.

I'm always surprised when someone gets a character's basic physical features wrong in some inexplicable way. I recently read a Hannibal fic where Hannibal's lips were thin and colorless and I got so confused, lol.

I started with, "this is a story about how real men have sex." Then it went from zero to fisting in under a hundred words.

In the middle of a normal sex scene, all of a sudden one character (who is totally human in a totally unsupernatural canon verse) has animal parts- like actual paws. It was so surprising, it didn't squick me- it was just like, "What...just happened? Did I miss something?"
