There was one NuBSG fic that contained surprise European Union bashing in it. Just seemed pretty out of the blue, and more than a little racist too.

The Euro Union isn't all white, there are also the Italians, Greeks, Spanish, and Portuguese in it.

They are Dirty-Whites. Not As white as white people, but not quite as dark as Latinos or Greeks. The type of people suitable for playing ethnic parts in movies, and favored for playing Indians in Westerns. Good substitutes for Arabs and North Africans too.

I once read a sci-fi Sentinel AU set at some point in the future which suddenly started talking about how much better off Russia and China were under emperors.
