It's a shame that out of the Big Two, the only real sources for "funny" these days are anything with Deadpool and most of what Keith Giffen is working on. But Giffen's humor hasn't changed since the 80s and I know Deadpool's schtick hasn't changed much either.

Maybe I just want Bart Allen back in his own comic.

Giffen's 'Larfleeze' ongoing and that 'GL: New Guardians' annual are two of the most atrocious things I've ever had the misfortune of reading.

A shame, because while I like Larfleeze, the character in general just cannot carry his own book to save his life. Giffen's "humor" doesn't help.

I completely agree with you. I've nothing against drama or angst, but that and funny CAN co-exist.

(In other news, I never really read Young Justice and I'd never seen the page you used for your base before. The meta. It BUUUUUURNS. Hilariously.)

The grimdark has devoured all. Hollywood, comics and prose alike.

That said, there are some shining points. For superhero comics specifically, the Quantum and Woody reboot from Valiant has shown some serious promise within the first three issue.

James Robert's More Than Meets the Eye tends to have at least some funny in every issue. Along with everything else from soul-crushing angst to face-palm worthy puns.

ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER RECS?

I came to second Quantum and Woody.

The TF comic I just honestly don't believe you about, though. I've never seen anyone other than a TF fan say a anything about it, good or bad.

...because if you read a Transformers comic, you're usually a Transformers fan?

It's not one of the things that people not interested in the franchise tend to grab for a random new try.

Glad you said it. There was a bit more facepalm and probably a few more insults in the response that went through my head. :)

Wish more people WOULD give it a random new try though. I actually did - I am a devoted capes fan - and MTMTE is something special.

Other recs:

I have heard really excellent things about the current Hawkeye comic, although I don't read it, and every panel I've seen has been good.

Also, the Blue Beetle run beginning in 2006 (with Keith Giffen and John Rogers writing) was really well-written and funny, especially Jaime's family and friends. That was the only comic I actually bought in issues for a long, long time.

I said it in my comment, but I'll put it here too:

Perhapanauts (by the guy who wrote Young Justice. Lots of fun, lots of heart, lots of fun fun monsters and mystery and some romance too)

Atomic Robo. Is a perfect comic. Pick up any trade, you'll always be able to follow, because each is designed to stand on its own. It's fun. It's silly. It's inspiring. It's science-y. It has Carl Sagan in it sometimes.

Young Avengers is pretty fun too, feels a bit like a Young Justice successor, but a little more serious. Hawkguy has dark or sad moments, but the attitude of the comic itself is one of a guy who doesn't take himself too seriously.

If digital isn't an issue, Amelia Cole bounces between silly and serious, but is almost never dark. And IDW just printed the first trade.

Princeless! It's fun, and funny, and has gorgeous art. Basic plot is "princess is one of 7 sisters locked in towers to be rescued. One of them decides to rescue herself instead, then goes adventuring to rescue her sisters." it's from action lab comics.

Kelly Sue DeConnick is laugh-out-loud funny for me in her humorous scenes. (There are sad, serious scenes in her work, as well. But the funny parts are really funny.) Try the current, ongoing Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble comics.

I enjoyed the first issue of Rat Queens, provided you don't mind light cheesecake along with your fantasy-adventure jokes and bloody mayhem.

Two things:

Atomic Robo.

Perhapanauts.

Perhapanauts especially if you, like me, dearly miss Young Justice. It's written by Todd Dezago and has a lot of the same vibe (heck, Choopie is basically Impulse, only...well, a Chupacabra). Atomic Robo because it is perfect.

No, it's not quite the same as being able to enjoy our beloved characters from the Big Two having fun and being happy on occasion. It's not quite the same as seeing Blue and Gold back in action or the Rogues getting up to hair-brained shenanigans or baby superheros being a team.

But it's a balm.

All I want is Plastic-Man teaming up with EVERYONE. Especially Batman. Is that too much to ask?

I used to judge JLA artists' quality by what they had Plas doing in the background. Just kinda standing there? Meh. Shaping himself into different weird objects in every panel, especially moment-appropriate ones (such as a balloon when someone's telling Bats to lighten up)? ILU artist, you are gud job.
