I must be the luckiest person ever (or really great at picking people to follow/hang out with) because in my ~10 years of fandom, I have never been attacked or questioned aggressively for a pairing or lack thereof. I should figure out my secret to fandom happiness and sell it.

It could be that I am the most laid back person ever. Because fandom doesn't really matter, so why get pissed?

That's the secret right there.

I don't ship, so I may be missing something, but really? I would agree with such secrets wholeheartedly, would it be not for the fact that I've never seen anyone bash anyone else's ships. Like, that sure must be a thing, but where is it?

I know this is a thing, a big thing, even, but I have a hard time imagining what a person's mindset must be like for them to say that "u r not a true Sherlock fan if you don't ship Johnlock" non-humorously.

where are the magical dumb places such people reside in

Tags on tumblr is the only place I can figure.

Personally, I mostly just can't be bothered to broadcast my shipping preferences or to argue with people about it. If someone disagrees with my preferences, I just let it drop. I don't care if they agree so I have no need to try to change anyone's mind. I also don't interact with other fans for everything I'm a fan of. If I read fic for something, I consider myself to be in the fandom, even if I've never discussed it with anyone. When I do seek out opportunities to interact with other fans, there usually has to be more to my enjoyment of whatever the fandom is about than just shipping, so even if we disagree on who should be boinking whom, we'll have other things to talk about.

I can see how a fandom dominated by one major pairing could be a problem, if people are hounding you out of fandom spaces for not shipping them, but I guess I've been lucky never to have encountered that.

I am joining your club, because i'm the same - nobody has ever attacked me over my shipping preferences. Have i had rousing discussions over why i think so-and-so do or don't make a logical/interesting/good pairing? Yes indeed.

But never any kind of dogpiling or name calling or anything. And i've never done that, myself - it's seems so pointless! It's all fantasy - there's plenty to go around.

I've been subjected to ship bashing in the past but it has never had any effect on me other than "okay, I don't get why you are so fucking angry".

I worry about lots of things and many things really get to me - even many trivial things - but shipping wars have never been part of that.
Maybe because they can't affect my personal life in any shape or form. Wow, some person hates me for shipping fictional character A with B - too bad for THEM. I can still create fanart. They can't chop off my hands ;)

I've never been attacked personally for my ships either, I've just seen general 'OMG WHY DO PEOPLE SHIP THIS' posts floating around the internet. It bothered me when I was a teenager, because I couldn't understand why someone was so angry over what people shipped, but now I just shrug and carry on.
