I must be the luckiest person ever (or really great at picking people to follow/hang out with) because in my ~10 years of fandom, I have never been attacked or questioned aggressively for a pairing or lack thereof. I should figure out my secret to fandom happiness and sell it.

It could be that I am the most laid back person ever. Because fandom doesn't really matter, so why get pissed?

That's the secret right there.

I don't ship, so I may be missing something, but really? I would agree with such secrets wholeheartedly, would it be not for the fact that I've never seen anyone bash anyone else's ships. Like, that sure must be a thing, but where is it?

I know this is a thing, a big thing, even, but I have a hard time imagining what a person's mindset must be like for them to say that "u r not a true Sherlock fan if you don't ship Johnlock" non-humorously.

where are the magical dumb places such people reside in

Personally, I mostly just can't be bothered to broadcast my shipping preferences or to argue with people about it. If someone disagrees with my preferences, I just let it drop. I don't care if they agree so I have no need to try to change anyone's mind. I also don't interact with other fans for everything I'm a fan of. If I read fic for something, I consider myself to be in the fandom, even if I've never discussed it with anyone. When I do seek out opportunities to interact with other fans, there usually has to be more to my enjoyment of whatever the fandom is about than just shipping, so even if we disagree on who should be boinking whom, we'll have other things to talk about.

I can see how a fandom dominated by one major pairing could be a problem, if people are hounding you out of fandom spaces for not shipping them, but I guess I've been lucky never to have encountered that.

I am joining your club, because i'm the same - nobody has ever attacked me over my shipping preferences. Have i had rousing discussions over why i think so-and-so do or don't make a logical/interesting/good pairing? Yes indeed.

But never any kind of dogpiling or name calling or anything. And i've never done that, myself - it's seems so pointless! It's all fantasy - there's plenty to go around.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been subjected to ship bashing in the past but it has never had any effect on me other than "okay, I don't get why you are so fucking angry".

I worry about lots of things and many things really get to me - even many trivial things - but shipping wars have never been part of that.
Maybe because they can't affect my personal life in any shape or form. Wow, some person hates me for shipping fictional character A with B - too bad for THEM. I can still create fanart. They can't chop off my hands ;)

I've never been attacked personally for my ships either, I've just seen general 'OMG WHY DO PEOPLE SHIP THIS' posts floating around the internet. It bothered me when I was a teenager, because I couldn't understand why someone was so angry over what people shipped, but now I just shrug and carry on.

I actually get the whole "They're not a pairing I find interesting" because I'm the same way. I try to read fic because I DO ship it, but at the same time I don't have any feelings about them. So, when I'm reading it's like, "Oh, okay" but I don't really have emotional reaction to their relationship, not like I do with my other ships. It's weird.

Same-ish. I like their friendly interactions but I'm not interested in seeing it romantically, and I enjoy Johnlock fics now and then.

Ongoing search for the accepting corner in fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I know the feeling. "I'm watching Sherlock." - "You mean Johnlock, amirite, amirite?? They were totally swooning over each other in that one!" and like, just no. things are even worse than in Supernatural where you can still be respected for shipping the bros as platonic bromance.

Re: Ongoing search for the accepting corner in fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And with Supernatural, there are two obnoxiously popular pairings to choose from instead of just one. Definitely more options there than in the Sherlock fandom.

I'm rather glad I have lots of rare pair shippers in my dwircle, so I don't encounter that attitude very often.

But yeah, I'm only reading John/Sherlock because there's not enough fic for my favourite pairings around. It's a weak compromise - I want to read in the Sherlock universe, and I'm not actively hating John/Sherlock, but it's not really satisfying.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
... This seems as good a place to ask as any. Does anyone have any good John/Mycroft recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to give you some, but alas, most of those I've happened across are either very abusive or "Mycroft is just a place-holder until Sherlock returns" neither of which I find very appealing. I hope someone recs you some good ones so I can read too. *L*

I've encountered some mild ship bashing and gotten PMs asking if a fic was going to end with a threesome or Johnlock (no, even though that would bring more hits/kudos), but I haven't experienced anything as crazy as CLAMP fandom back when ship wars included death threats.

Ignore those people, anyway, some of them may fade away after the next series.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Death threats over ship wars??? Holy shit D:

Monoship fandoms, and any of the fandoms with the major juggernaut ships, are not my favourite. Not even because of the shipping wars, so much, but because of the lack of variety. After a while it's just depressing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ship them because they have the best fic. I imagine I'm a worse shipper than you, OP. (And by that I mean "don't worry about it, what rare pairs do you ship? :D")

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you. I'm also not against Sherlock/John as a pairing, and have read a few good Sherlock/John fics, but I actually prefer to ship John with Mycroft and Sherlock with Lestrade as my primary pairings. Hell, I've even read more Sherlock/Mycroft, Sherlock/Moriarty and John/Lestrade fics than I have Sherlock/John stuff!

When I started watching this I expected myself to ship Sherlock and John since I shipped Ritchie!Holmes and Watson, but then my train of thought went this way. "These two are pretty hot and oh here we are at Saint Barts and there is Molly and she is adorable and sweet and plucky...she kinda reminds me of Kaylee from Firefly and crushing on a posh genius who doesn't seem to notice her and oh look he insults her and doesn't mean it and he says he is sorry and kisses her...oh and here he is saying she does count and he needs her...damn it I ship them!"

I do love Johnlock and I read it and enjoy art and gif sets but my heart is going more and more towards Sherlock/Molly every day.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ritchie!verse OT3 for me (Mary rocks). Honestly, though, the movies were one of the single slashiest versions of Sherlock Holmes I've ever seen, and that is saying quite a bit. They danced. I'm fairly sure the audience was actually meant to ship them in that verse, or at least come to the conclusion that Holmes, at least, was head over heels and also extremely jealous of Mary.

The Sherlock pair don't have at all the same dynamic. Which is not necessarily to say that they're more or less shippable, but just that shipping Ritchie!verse wouldn't necessarily lead to shipping Sherlock!verse. Or any other verse, really. I only shipped ACD platonically, for example (platonic and really intense, but still platonic).

I have similar experiences in tumblr. I'm not so involved in the fandom and I don't ship anyone. So scrolling through any Sherlock blog or tag just ends in me getting very frustrated.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
You can't be a Sherlock fan if you don't ship Johnlock.

Someone literally said almost exactly that to my face a couple days ago. I feel your pain, OP. I don't ship anything in this fandom, but any time I dare mention that it's either 'why would you even watch if you don't ship Johnlock?' or 'well, what on earth do you ship instead?'
