Movie recs?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2013-09-28 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Heyyy guys, it's a quiet Saturday, I have the apartment to myself, and I want to relax from the week.

Anybody have any good movie recommendations?

My favorite genres are the mystery/thriller, action type things, and really abstract thoughtful films (like, idk, Pi), so anything you can think of from there would be good.

But I'm totally open to trying new things!

Frailty. Mystery/Thriller, sort of thoughtful.

Primer. The most abstract film ever. Three times watching it, I still have no idea what is going on.

Donnie Darko. Abstract/Thoughtful.

Awesome, thanks for the ideas!

Related: I have been interested in Donnie Darko for a while, but I literally cannot get past the idea of the fucked up rabbit. Just how bad is it? Are we talking "see this in your dreams" bad, or "that looks like shitty effects" bad?

It is creepy but he isn't really a villain in the movie. So I doubt you will be seeing him in your dreams. :P

Lower your expectations and you'll probably be okay. But it is much too hyped.

None of my favourites match the descriptions (and those that do are really short) - and I presume you already saw all the commonplace stuff like BTTF - so I'm just seconding the request. I watched a few Sherlock Holmes adaptations recently, but they weren't very good (apart from Without a Clue, but that's a comedy).

BTTF? Not 100% sure what that is.

Also not sure what your favorite genres are, but if you're into black or dark humor, Terrible Bosses is a pretty good movie. You can never go wrong with Jason Bateman or Charlie Day.

Although I usually go for more or less light-hearted things, I'm fine with black humour :) Thanks!

BTTF=Back to the Future.

If you haven't seen this one yet, I would highly recommend The Fall (Here's the trailer for it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO0LYcCoeJY

You're welcome! And yeah, it's beautiful scenery wise. It was shot all over the world!

Ink - sci-fi/fantasy/action, not wildly abstract, but kind of dark and very interesting.

The Movie Hero - er, I havn't seen this in a while but I remember it being a really feel good, thoughtful sort of film.

Seconding Ink, that one was surprisingly lovely, to me.

Oh man. You are like the only other person who's seen it, I swear. I really love Ink. I've seen it like 5 times.

Maybe I'll drop in! I'm not much one for the genre types, but I'll check out anything once if it's free. :P

An action type film:

Dhoom - The best way I can think of to describe this is sort of like a Bollywood version of The Fast and the Furious with motorcycles, random musical numbers, and one scene that was totally ripped off from Ocean's Eleven. Also, the two main characters have the "straightlaced guy and non-straightlaced guy must put aside their differences and work together" buddy cop dynamic going on, if you like that sort of thing. There's a sequel, but I haven't watched it yet so IDK what it's like.

And a not-so-actiony one:

Joe vs. the Volcano - I'm not sure if "abstract" is quite the right word, but I have a feeling you might like it. The plot is impossible to explain without spoiling anything. It's labeled a romantic comedy, but don't let that put you off; it avoids most of the usual romantic comedy clichés that can make that type of movie cringe-worthy.

I admit to being kind of intrigued about Bollywood productions after I watched 3 Idiots, so thanks for the Dhoom rec.

I checked out Joe vs the volcano, and it seems harmless and likable, so I'll check it out once my melts from some of the more intense and/or creepier abstract films. :D

Jacob's Ladder. Mystery: check, thriller: check, action: check, really abstract: check, thoughtful; check. Also completely mind-twisting and unforgettable.

Omg I love Jacob's Ladder, and this is exactly the type of genre meld that I love. Though I haven't watched it in a few years-- might we worth a rewatch. Thanks!

Stranger Than Fiction was kind of cool, it's about a dude who realizes he's the main character of a novel and must figure out among other things who is writing his story

Try 'Blindness' - it's a bit of a hard watch at times (there is rape and violence), but really, really good. Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo.
