Comics Havok is much cuter than XMFC Havok.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Yeah...there's a difference between selling out and compromise, "Uncle Tom" doesn't refer to the latter. That said, technically mutants do belong to something bigger: All the people who can do stuff like shoot fire from every orifice and/or destroy the moon, as differentiated from the people who...can't. Ugh, this is why I've always hated people-who-have-actual-powers as metaphors for real-life minorities.

Yeaaaaaah, ditto. I hate it when writers do it with monster too.

"Vampires are just like gay people! The fear against them is totally unjustified!"
Unless I missed something, gay people don't fucking infect people. Or hypnotize them. Or need other people's blood to live. There is good reason people would fear things like vampires if they existed.

I didn't realize Wolverine was on Havok's side on this, I really think the writers behind this simply don't get the point of the X-men, and really they should hang in some queer spaces for a while... there might not be one single mutant community just like there's not one single gay or trans community, but mutants have forged into communities both big and small for mutual support and protection and that's no less genuine than any other grouping.

Mutants have been shown to have their own clubs, their own fashion, their own lingo, and much more in past issues, this has all evolved from their need to group together to share their experiences and protect themselves from outsiders. This is how all communities evolve.

Havok and Wolverine are part of the Uncanny Avengers now.

The real X-Men think they're full of crap.

Yeah I read the Kitty part before she's my favorite X-man and I thought it was pretty awesome, but yeah I just didn't know about Wolvie being in on this.

I think there are two sides -- communities formed on the basis of being mutants are just as valid as any other community. On the other hand, being a mutant does not guarantee and should not require belonging to a mutant community.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but Havok was basically speaking for all mutants in his speech ("Please don't call us mutants").

Wolverine.

For a manlet, you're alright.

Fuq turning an inborn characteristic into some forced cultural identity.

Wolverine being Politically Correct is a thing to behold XD

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Havok is very rarely written well. Which is frustrating, because he's my favorite x-men. And like so many characters, his personality changes with whomever is writing him.

I just want "Kingbreaker" Havok back :c

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And I hate it when people use "Uncle Tom" as a pejorative when they clearly have zero knowledge about the actual character. (Fyi, he maintains his dignity and worth under abuse throughout the narrative, never losing his self-respect, and finally is killed as punishment for defying his cruel master's orders to do something that Tom considers morally unacceptable.)

A-fucking-men.

I fucking hate today's activist crowd. They are little different from the people they rail against in the sense that they know little in the way of history and can't even fucking bother to look up the etymology of fucking words before railing against them. They're lazy fucks who use "causes" to make themselves look and feel good.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
why is wolverine in costume in the first panel but not in the last one

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
because they're two different scenes.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Because there is something really fucking terrible about wanting to be regarded as an individual human being rather than as a set of pre-determined cultural characteristics.

I, personally, am totally cool with being referred to as, "that lesbian woman," as opposed to, "[my name]." And if I wanted to be referred to as, "[my name]," then that would totally make me awful and a traitor to both my gender and my orientation, because all that I am can be distilled and reduced to my vagina and the people I happen to want to fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what he's saying, though, in the full speech. It'd be like saying that you don't want there to be words for sexuality because that's "divisive". That you don't like being called the "l-word".

There's nothing wrong with being called an lesbian, and you'd be implying that there is.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read Marvel in a long time so I don't know how things are at large, but this sounds a lot like their queerness analogue is taking on that there are many views about how "the community" relates to society at large and whether that community should have to include them etc etc, and that sounds pretty cool because even when it's fucked up I really like that these conversations happen

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not American and got Uncle Tom mixed up with Uncle Sam. Needless to say, I was really confused by this secret.
