I know what you mean. If they were really like our favorite character then we wouldn't dislike them. It all comes down to how we perceive them vs. how they perceive themselves. The real question is which one is correct?

I can tolerate/appreciate/enjoy a lot of stuff from a fictional character that I wouldn't in a RL person.

This. I like SO many characters whose personality traits would and DO drive me nuts in person. But in the context of their story, it works.

(For example being quick to anger and violent is a terrible way to be a real life person... but a Sith? Go for it)

I love a lot of characters I wouldn't be able to stand as people.
