Haha, I only get annoyed when people say they identify with my favorite characters but are actually nothing like them.

And of course I'm biased. :P lol

Oh I don't know, when people say they identify with a character, IMO it's fine to identify with aspects of a character even if in some ways you're completely different.

The only thing that bothers me is people projecting/pretending a character has certain traits because they want to identify with them. Just no.

I know what you mean. If they were really like our favorite character then we wouldn't dislike them. It all comes down to how we perceive them vs. how they perceive themselves. The real question is which one is correct?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to interact with your favorite character, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can tolerate/appreciate/enjoy a lot of stuff from a fictional character that I wouldn't in a RL person.

I love a lot of characters I wouldn't be able to stand as people.

The only character amongst my favourites who is popular enough for a significant number of people to identify with him is Sherlock Holmes, and... yeah. I don't think I've ever encountered a person who could actually say that they identify with Holmes and not sound like an idiot.

I totally get the sentiment, though. I don't like the idea that somebody I like might strongly resemble somebody I dislike (fictional characters or not). This makes me vaguely afraid that the "good" guy can change and be just like the "bad" one. I don't mind particular personality traits being similar, though - not as long as there is some major, important difference.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
When it comes to Sherlock, for it's more like I will start disliking you the moment you say you think you identify with Sherlock. Because even though Sherlock is one of my fave fictional characters ever, I would intensely dislike him as a person if I knew him and therefore judge anyone who says they have or admire his personality. And if someone says they're a deductive genius? Well, that's a whole 'nother level of self deluded narcissism I will not even try to tolerate.

intrigueing: (buffy eww)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-09-29 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm...well, I dunno. I don't know anyone offhand, but I think some people who say they identify with Holmes wouldn't necessarily mean they're a deductive genius or anything. They might mean that they fall into pits of apathetic gloom whenever they don't have something to occupy their mind. Or that they keep their house in horrible disarray and eat and sleep and work at bizarre hours. Or get so wrapped up in a task that it totally consumes them until it's completed.

I actually think it's more common for people to identify with weirder or more minor characteristics of characters than the most central ones.

Why not take it as a positive? Like hey, this horrible person must have at least one positive trait. Calm your hatred, give peace a chance!

And um, I don't know if that's ever been an issue for me, but I like a lot of characters who range from jerk to villain, so if someone I disliked identified with them I'd just laugh.

I had that happen then the person went on to explain WHY they "felt a connection" or whatever and it turns out they just liked all the popular "headcanon" fanon stuff, and nothing canon. In fact hated canon. I felt better.

Yes. This. So much.

Or even saying they like them, I'm like get your hands off her you're mean you're not allowed to like her.

(Unless it's the main character of the thing, then I'm OK - people hating on the main character is an even bigger pet peeve of mine.)

it's even worse when they identify with your favorite character and bash their sweet and adorable canonical love interest because they self-insert ship your favorite character with the canonical love interest's alternate future self who fave character explicitly rejected in favor of canonical love interest

no I am not bitter why do you ask what do you mean this is a weirdly specific example

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
What about the characters do they identify with? Have they said? Maybe by having that character in common you can find common ground and maybe even become friends with some one you didn't know you would like otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. Specially when it's roleplayers that suck but think they have an impeccable handle on the character.

No you don't. You're the most ooc writer in the world.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially when the hated person goes as far to have people call them by that character's name as a nickname. That annoys me the most, especially when they're nothing like that character at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want to hiss and hide my fav char like a jealous girlfriend haha I've been more jealous over characters than I was over people as a young child :P

Oh, I know how you feel. You see the person you dislike liking a character and in your mind you are "get your grubby hands out of my character!! He's/She's mine!!!"

It's wrong, but you feel like something's not right when it happens.
ariakas: (lol hikawa)

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-09-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahah I swear there's got to be a German word for that feeling when you find out that someone you despise likes something you like.

The mature thing to do would to be do shrug and realize that people have complex interests and tastes, and what makes you dislike that person might have nothing to do with why they like the thing you like. Or figure that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Or maybe that the thing you like is so good that even stupid, horrible people like it too.

...Of course what actually ends up happening is I start questioning my own tastes and asking myself if I really like that thing or it was as I good as I thought after all ;p

not just you

I've had shows ruined

See, the character I think of when I read this is the Doctor. And people definitely sound like idiots when they say they identify with the Doctor so I'm just gonna agree with this emphatically.

What's worse is someone says they identify with a character, and as you get to know them you find out they are a complete and utter jerk, which totally puts you off the character forever more.

I've had this happen in RP.
