The only character amongst my favourites who is popular enough for a significant number of people to identify with him is Sherlock Holmes, and... yeah. I don't think I've ever encountered a person who could actually say that they identify with Holmes and not sound like an idiot.

I totally get the sentiment, though. I don't like the idea that somebody I like might strongly resemble somebody I dislike (fictional characters or not). This makes me vaguely afraid that the "good" guy can change and be just like the "bad" one. I don't mind particular personality traits being similar, though - not as long as there is some major, important difference.

When it comes to Sherlock, for it's more like I will start disliking you the moment you say you think you identify with Sherlock. Because even though Sherlock is one of my fave fictional characters ever, I would intensely dislike him as a person if I knew him and therefore judge anyone who says they have or admire his personality. And if someone says they're a deductive genius? Well, that's a whole 'nother level of self deluded narcissism I will not even try to tolerate.

Sherlock the character of the TV show? Ay, I imagine many people would find a real-life Sherlock insufferable, but that's kind of the point. He's supposed to be hated by many and admired by few.

As to the deductive genius part, I generally agree... unless, of course, the person in question would truly possess a similar skill. (which is not altogether impossible). But of course it would be nicer if they both possessed it and were humble about it.

I'm more irked by the fact that people say "I identify with Holmes/Sherlock" and mean "I'm an insufferable dick who thinks he's cleverer than everyone else", not understanding that
a) Genius, real genius, is an essential part of the character
b) The original Holmes is much less of an insufferable dick than some folks think

AYRT
I totally understand b) because I loved the original stories, but I'm still pretty sure I would dislike someone with his personality. Probably because his personality is only justifiable with his genius. I think I mainly have a problem with arrogance, ha. 'People say "I identify with Holmes/Sherlock" and mean "I'm an insufferable dick who thinks he's cleverer than everyone else"' this hits the nail on the head exactly on why I don't like (most) people who say they 'identify' with Sherlock, thank you!

It's been a long time since I've read any of the books, but wasn't the original Holmes mostly just a loner with some weird habits. That's why I'm always boggled by the BBC Sherlock fans who go on about how accurate Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal is. Because, uh, it isn't. At all. It's an interpretation, no more 'accurate' than the Holmes from Elementary or the Holmes from the Guy Ritchie films.

Hmm...well, I dunno. I don't know anyone offhand, but I think some people who say they identify with Holmes wouldn't necessarily mean they're a deductive genius or anything. They might mean that they fall into pits of apathetic gloom whenever they don't have something to occupy their mind. Or that they keep their house in horrible disarray and eat and sleep and work at bizarre hours. Or get so wrapped up in a task that it totally consumes them until it's completed.

I actually think it's more common for people to identify with weirder or more minor characteristics of characters than the most central ones.

^That's a valid point, but I rather thought the OP meant "identifying" as in "considering their entire personality to be similar to that of the character".

Ah I see. I always thought it would be more like identifying with certain traits, because it's well, pretty damn unlikely to be similar to all aspects of a fictional character. ;)
