Haha, I only get annoyed when people say they identify with my favorite characters but are actually nothing like them.

And of course I'm biased. :P lol

Oh I don't know, when people say they identify with a character, IMO it's fine to identify with aspects of a character even if in some ways you're completely different.

The only thing that bothers me is people projecting/pretending a character has certain traits because they want to identify with them. Just no.

I end up "splitting the difference" in terms of which characters I relate to all the time. My personality often matches up to one character, but my "social role" (re: relationships with other characters/people) matches up to another, though there are occasions where I identify strongly with a character in both social role and personality, but those tend to be rare.

I tend not to say it, though, because when I say which characters in my fandoms I identify with most and explain why, people tend to...assume certain things, and I'd rather avoid that if it's not necessary.

Yeah, that bothers me too. Especially when I think it's warping the character. (i.e. It's none of my business if someone thinks tame stuff they'd do is villainous, but when they're attributing it to the Joker, I'm going to back-button if I even bothered to read.)

The other thing I really can't stand is when a canon sets up some trait as overwhelmingly important and desirable and its fandom responds by falling all over itself to prove it's full of people with said trait. There were places associated with Death Note that I wouldn't go near because discussion was of secondary importance, while everyone's real point seemed to be trying to impress people with how smart they were. It's obnoxious enough when you have a few people doing that, but when most of the commenters are not-so-secretly dying to be mistaken for L, it's a disaster.
