Re: Unpaid internships

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've heard, the main problem is that companies will promise internships with a lot of valuable experiences, like getting to shadow certain types of employees, but when the interns show up, they get shuffled off to do data entry or open mail or whatever. They wind up doing grunt work for free while gaining no real experience or making any connections and they're afraid to quit because that looks bad.

Not all unpaid internships are like this, I'm sure, but you need to be careful. My field doesn't have internships, so I'm kind of baffled by why such a thing even exists. We just have classes/schools (for which you get academic credit), volunteer opportunities, and jobs.
