Unpaid internships

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they useful experiences that job hopefuls should endure to show their commitment and skill-building before finding a real job?

Or are they inherently an opportunity for a company to take advantage of young people?

Is unpaid work ever okay, provided it's not volunteering?

It's this one.

Young people who can afford to work for no money too...

Opportunity for companies to take advantage of young people. For my last semester getting my education degree, I had to work 40 hours a week for the entire semester while also taking two evening classes and doing work for my "internship." While paying my college to do this work. :|

It depends on where you intern. *Some* internships are incredibly rewarding and you learn a ton from them about how your industry works and what you learn is more than worth paying what you'd be paid elsewhere, just for the experience. The majority... nope, not worth it at all. But it's not entirely hopeless. It all depends on where you are and who you're working under.

I'm doing a journalism internship, and at this point, it's been nothing but flexible with lots of support. It only takes a few hours a week and I can do it at home - copyediting, plus a short article. I get my name featured.

Do I think I deserve to get paid? Well... I guess some compensation would be nice - or should I say, ethical? But it's not that hard or time-consuming, and the manager has been extremely helpful and I am sure this will be a great reference for the future. I'm not bothered about doing it for free.

But it's really not an average internship, I suppose.

Depends on the internships, tbh. For careers that depend on experience and reputation it can be a great way to get started and have something to put on your resume to show you have an idea of what you're doing. Plus some places do end up hiring good interns at the end of the internship.

However, there are a lot of places that take advantage of their interns so you have to be careful.

It's a gamble whether they're a good opportunity or not. I got hired as a full-time employee with benefits because of an internship, but I've heard other people aren't as lucky.

From what I've heard, the main problem is that companies will promise internships with a lot of valuable experiences, like getting to shadow certain types of employees, but when the interns show up, they get shuffled off to do data entry or open mail or whatever. They wind up doing grunt work for free while gaining no real experience or making any connections and they're afraid to quit because that looks bad.

Not all unpaid internships are like this, I'm sure, but you need to be careful. My field doesn't have internships, so I'm kind of baffled by why such a thing even exists. We just have classes/schools (for which you get academic credit), volunteer opportunities, and jobs.

Unless you're guaranteed a decent job at the end of it, I can't justify unpaid internships.

Two to an incredible degree.

Now volunteering with reasonable restrictions on the amount of time you can dedicate, that's different. Let's say a day a week working in your chosen field, but internships basically limit what should be entry level jobs to those with wealthy parents to support them, and take a job out of the economy.

Hm.

I'm not sure why but for some reason I really thought you were going to be on the other side of this one.

I agree with you, though!

It's definitive: no. (That is, a study has demonstrated that unpaid internships do not lead to significantly better job outcomes than not interning at all, no matter what your major is.)

If it's a two month long internship that's connected to the intern's school, I think unpaid is technically okay, but not desirable. But after that I don't think even a minimal salary is unreasonable. I was an intern at my current job, I didn't make much, but I made. Then I got a full time position and started making a normal salary. The problem is that the latter doesn't always happen anymore... I have a friend who did end up working for the company she'd intern'd for, but only a year later when they decided they wanted her back.

Uhm, well, I really guess it depends on individual circumstances. Personally, I have an unpaid internship at a pretty good technical institute, and I'm doing some cutting edge work in a field that hasn't had much exploration by academics or scientists. This will look awesome on my resume, and might even lead to some paid compensation for my future work there.

Plus, it's building my research skills, and analytic skills. I'm even bulking up on my foreign language skills for some parts.

On unpaid work-- I've spent most of my life doing unpaid work under various circumstances, for various organizations and people, and as long as I can kick it to a higher employer, I'm always down with it. Whatever opens opportunities is good for me.

But, for whatever reason, you are able to do that. For someone who actually needs to, you know, pay rent and put food on the table, wasting time on unpaid work is just that: a waste of time.

You are privileged. That is the only reason an unpaid internship works for you.

Re: Unpaid internships

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Ahaha. No. The internship is a stipulation of my graduate degree-- which I am getting by the grace of 25K of student loan debt.

I pay my own rent, my own groceries, and all of my incidental other bills. No one supports me, and you can bet your ass I won't work for the institute for free when I'm finished with school, because, you know-- I have to have money to live.

All the other times I've worked for free have been incidental to school-- which was fine, it meant I was getting experience while in school-- or it was through a family labor system. Still doing actual work in an actual job, but unpaid.

I will acknowledge that I am lucky to have an internship right now that has a lot of benefits other than sheer monetary reward. It's not like I'll be at the same level I was at when I started.

I had a shitty experience

At the interview they told me I was on the team and they would email me later that day (they knew my email prior because I emailed them for an address)

Never got anything back. reminded them I existed (politely asking for assignments) Nothing. Kinda pissed me off.

I never did an internship for my major. And with good reason. Cause I had a friend who did and all she ended up doing for one of my teachers was just edit. Edit, edit, and more edit. There was really no work for her that was creative at all.

Now, she was good at that and when she got the chance, she should she had initiative in the field and was able to get a job in said field, but over all, the intership, from what she described to me, was a waste of time. ALL it did was get her recommendations. That's all it was good for.

I'm both happy and sad I never did the internship.
