Re: Unpaid internships

Uhm, well, I really guess it depends on individual circumstances. Personally, I have an unpaid internship at a pretty good technical institute, and I'm doing some cutting edge work in a field that hasn't had much exploration by academics or scientists. This will look awesome on my resume, and might even lead to some paid compensation for my future work there.

Plus, it's building my research skills, and analytic skills. I'm even bulking up on my foreign language skills for some parts.

On unpaid work-- I've spent most of my life doing unpaid work under various circumstances, for various organizations and people, and as long as I can kick it to a higher employer, I'm always down with it. Whatever opens opportunities is good for me.

But, for whatever reason, you are able to do that. For someone who actually needs to, you know, pay rent and put food on the table, wasting time on unpaid work is just that: a waste of time.

You are privileged. That is the only reason an unpaid internship works for you.

ayrt

Ahaha. No. The internship is a stipulation of my graduate degree-- which I am getting by the grace of 25K of student loan debt.

I pay my own rent, my own groceries, and all of my incidental other bills. No one supports me, and you can bet your ass I won't work for the institute for free when I'm finished with school, because, you know-- I have to have money to live.

All the other times I've worked for free have been incidental to school-- which was fine, it meant I was getting experience while in school-- or it was through a family labor system. Still doing actual work in an actual job, but unpaid.

I will acknowledge that I am lucky to have an internship right now that has a lot of benefits other than sheer monetary reward. It's not like I'll be at the same level I was at when I started.
