what does you and the OP not liking Joss Whedon have to do with feminism??

(no really this is a serious question i don't get it)

apparently it is A Thing in feminist circles to hate Whedon and think that all of his female characters are an insult to women everywhere

oh wow seriously...

i mean sure the writing has flaws, but i do consider myself a feminist and i've always found that Whedon does pretty okay on the female character front... some are pretty awesome and some aren't. he's not particularly good at it, but he's also not bad at it... man some feminists do weird things

Same, and I also think you have to consider that when some of his shows first came out, he was pretty damn feminist. The "stupid girl" being the evil creature about to kill the guy and not the other way around was a neck bite heard around the world.

Do I think he's as feminist as he wants to be, as some fans want him to be? Not... really. But his female characters are human beings, not walking glitter bottles, and even now that's a start.

i mean the awesome women in buffy alone should be reason enough not to completely dislike his female characters. also dollhouse, firefly... they do not only have kickass girls, they have complex, well-rounded females with flaws and emotions just like real people have.

Yeah he was feminist when Buffy and maybe Angel first rolled out, but even by the time Buffy and Angel wrapped feminism had moved on. Whedon hasn't, he's still writing his female characters like it was still the mid-90s. His moment has passed, and he needs to update his dialogue and character toolbox if he wants to stay relevant. Buffy seems so damn patronizing now with all its "you go girl" and the whole "look at the blonde bimbo who is secretly a hero, your mind=blown at how special she is".

Joss Whedon was associated with feminism in the media a long time ago because he wrote some strong female characters into TV shows like Buffy that were fairly revolutionary at the time. He made a huge step forward, and that was about it, and I suspect a huge part of that is just media savvy - namely, recognizing that there is a huge portion of female fans wanting better female characters that no one else was tapping/even trying to, so he went in and scooped up most of that demographic for himself. However, a lot of fans blew him up into this image of a feminist writer in the media, creating rather unrealistic expectations about him and his writing, leading to a lot of disappointment when he fell short of those expectations.

I think we can appreciate the progressive attitude towards female characters he helped perpetuate while still pointing out the flaws and problems in his writing, without turning him into a hero or a demon. *shrugs* Apparently, I'm a minority in that attitude.

You are just sensible. Sensible people don't wait neary as much time raging on the internet about the flaws of other people.
