Re: what do you consider "older"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering this, because my parents and my aunts and uncles, who are all 60+ are online and have never discouraged me or mocked or had any negative ideas about online friends. And my best friends mother participates in MMOs and is an active part of that community and considers her guild mates her friends.

Then you have all those bloggers, professional or hobbyists, that I find tend to be older (30+) and genuinely consider some of the regulars or fellow bloggers friends.

I think the "older people don't understand the internet" is an outdated idea.

Honestly, you're family sounds like the exception to the rule, and most people in their 30-40's don't tend to get classified in the "older" category.

I have a family with a similar age composition to your's and I've been mocked, told I'm "wasting my time" if I'm talking to online friends [who totes don't exist], and basically had it implied I was wasting my life...and I know other people who've gotten that treatment from people in that age range as well. Older people just don't tend to be as comfortable with the internet or spend as much time on it which, in the majority of cases means they don't understand online friendships or communities. I've actually had people [again, in the age range mentioned] admit that, and that it's why they think it's a waste of time.
