It could be a sort of subconscious attempt at self-sabotage or something. I find that psychological issues like low self-esteem and depression can be disturbingly self-perpetuating, to the point that I sometimes feel like anthropomorphizing them as creatures that are actively fighting my efforts to fix myself (to the point of sabotaging my interest in helping myself) so they can live on.

Nasty stuff. Good to talk to a trained professional about it if you can.
