Jon does more general humor and points out the idiocy flat out while Stephen points out the idiocy with a character.

I agree with your confusion- those two are super good friends firstly. Second, I've never seen anyone bash Jon while praising Colbert. Either they love them both or like one but find the other more entertaining, but even then, it's always with respect for the other and the understanding that they're both... I don't know how to describe it. It's like... it wouldn't be as much fun if only one of them existed. Maybe that's just me?
