It's well known that tumblr is awful for discussion, so that's not surprising.

For fandom stuff, Reddit is a lot more accepting than Tumblr. Hell, even in the big subs there are shitty people but they usually don't involve anon spam and people screaming at you to kill yourselves. I'll take a racist, sexist asshole over those psychos any day.

Isn't... this how it's supposed to be? I mean, it's tumblr. What kind of discussion can really happen there?

Ugh, yeah. I just keep track of the relevant tags in a certain fandom for the pretty pictures. The discussion it gets on Tumblr makes me roll my eyes (and like you, I've found good convos elsewhere).

Good choice.

How is it embarrassing? Reddit is a huge site, there are subreddits for virtually every topic, and apart from the massive default subreddits, you're likely to find lots of interesting discussion. It's a much better layout for discussion in the first place, and the idiots do mostly stick to the popular subreddits.

Even the Harry Potter subreddit isn't too bad, and it's pretty huge for a fandom subreddit. Every month they have a week of pure discussion, no pictures/links. It's great. And since it's about 50/50 on the gender scale, there's not that much misogyny!

Reddit is better for discussion overall. I started getting into it latedly (& I do subscribe to TLA sub), and it's much more enjoyable than I had previously though.

Tumblr's format does not really foster discussions.

Reddit is better for discussion, but it seems like everyone there gets to new information months after it's released, making a lot of the discussion pretty outdated. And I'm pretty big into shipping and crackshipping and Reddit is less tolerant of that than Tumblr is.

I feel like /r/TheLastAirbender is mostly Tumblr reposts, at least the top posts are.

Doesn't surprise me. Reddit is so much easier for conversations.

Tumblr is better for gifs.

On the one hand, better format for discussion, particularly if you have good mods. On the other hand, get a fandom that's big enough, and the discussion gets lots in memes, reposts, bullshit "DAE [common thing/unapologetic sexist or racist thing]" self text, and other fucktardery.

That's because reddit is essentially a weirdly formatted message board, whereas tumblr is a platform where people don't discuss things, but often reblog a opinion they disagree with and add their own snark or hateful comment, rather than actually discuss anything. Message boards, no matter how shitty, will always have more discussion and interaction.

And often people will just not even reblog, they'll get angry and then make a new text post with their own angry view and you'll have no idea what inspired that anger, and then others on the tag might see that post and just get angrier themselves and so it's just random anger stacked on top of anger, with no references or longer posts to explain where this all originated from. Therefore things will easy go from absolutely nothing into THE BIGGEST WANK IN FANDOM HISTORY (until the next one, anyway).
