That's because reddit is essentially a weirdly formatted message board, whereas tumblr is a platform where people don't discuss things, but often reblog a opinion they disagree with and add their own snark or hateful comment, rather than actually discuss anything. Message boards, no matter how shitty, will always have more discussion and interaction.

And often people will just not even reblog, they'll get angry and then make a new text post with their own angry view and you'll have no idea what inspired that anger, and then others on the tag might see that post and just get angrier themselves and so it's just random anger stacked on top of anger, with no references or longer posts to explain where this all originated from. Therefore things will easy go from absolutely nothing into THE BIGGEST WANK IN FANDOM HISTORY (until the next one, anyway).
