His rank is heichou in the original, which translates to lance corporal, apparently. (No idea how high that is.)

I would assume it depends on the culture. In the US Marines, a lance is an E-3. The third level from the bottom of enlisted/non-officers. They have authority over the really new, really green guys, but are pretty low in the overall scheme of things.

pretty low, as has already been indicated. nothing even close to any officer (they're kind of separate systems. no matter how far a lance corporal went up his chain of command he'd never become or outrank an officer)

he's a captain. the lance corporal thing is wrong and has been perpetuated for a long time in the fandom, unfortunately, just like a lot of the wrong romanizations have been used for names before they were given confirmed, official spellings.

I prefer "Squad Leader" most of all, but you can imagine my consternation at seeing an E3 and O3 rank used interchangeably.

I'm referring mostly to fanfiction. It's cool that there is an answer, but it's no good until the majority of the community can recognize it.

Hell, I've read fic where both terms are used.

Well, as previous comments have said above, the translation of Levi's rank as 'lance corporal' is most likely a mistake. And according to official sources (unless this information changes), there are essentially only three 'commanding ranks' in the Survey Corps (Commander, Squad Leader, and Team Leader). So exactly equating the military ranks in Shingeki with American ones would be a bit of a difficult endeavor. Referring to Levi as 'captain' doesn't essentially make him an 'O3 rank'. And as far as my information goes, the rankings used in Shingeki also don't really match any Japanese military ranks.

I personally think Levi ranks as Squad Leader, but functions as a specialized one (he was the leader of the Special Operations Squad after all)- hence the title 'heichou' instead of 'buntaichou'- which then probably ranks him the same as Mike and Hanji, the conventional Squad Leaders. And since they are all second in command from Erwin, that likely makes them military officers.

That's my two cents on the topic, anyways. The information regarding a lot of the setting of Shingeki has just been so frustratingly vague

I'm thinking he's pretty far up considering he's basically Erwin's right hand man. I think Hanji's farther up than her title suggests as well.

I don't think he has much authority since he is usually one the ones following orders, but at the same time he is still the strongest soldier. So I guess the official ranking doesn't matter much in the big picture.

While we're at it, can we talking about calling the 調査兵団 the "Survey Corps"?

I don't know if this was one of the mangaka's magnificently Engrish translations (see: "Attack on Titan") or what, but we have a word for surveying/information gathering/scouting as part of the military, in English: reconnaissance. Why yes, "survey" is one of the first literal translations of 調査 on J-dict, sparky, have a cookie and dunk it the milk of your fail. If you'd only scrolled down a little bit further to find 調査隊 or "reconnaissance team/corps" you might have come up with something an English speaker might actually call a military unit!

The fansubs I watched called them the "recon corps". Sounded good, TBH. What does the official manga translation call them?
