I really, really hate it when people use two spaces after a period. A co-worker once gave me a document that I had to edit into a larger document and I went through the entire thing on my own time to remove all of the double spaces.

Oh my gosh, same here. The MLA and the Chicago Manual of Style says to use one space after a period, so using two spaces isn't even right.

2 spaces after a period was standard before the internet.

One space was always standard for printed material. Pick up a book printed before the internet and there will be one space after each period. People only started adding a second space because the fonts used by typewriters made everything look weird without an extra space. We don't use those fonts anymore.
