Weird grammarish things you're picky about

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You know that twinge you get inside when you see a spelling or grammar mistake? Well, I also get that when I see certain correct words or phrases that I just don't like. The one I'm thinking of now is "who, what, when, where, why". I get al twitchy when I see that because to me, it has to be "who, what, where, when, why", and any other way is just wrong. I think it's because it makes a pyramid with the number of letters (3, 4, 5, 4, 3), which is stupid, but it's how I get.

Do any of you have these things you just can't stand even though they're not actually wrong?

Lack of the Oxford comma.

(Admittedly, if I weren't on anon, I'd swear that not using the Oxford comma is actually wrong.)

Prescriptivist wannabes.

(I'm a prescriptivist descriptivist. The answer to any question about what is right or wrong is READ THE FUCKING STYLE GUIDE.)

DA

Lies! The answer is what makes sense!

It took me a minute to figure out why AYRT couldn't explain while anon, but then I remembered this image: http://weknowawesome.com/2011/09/30/the-oxford-comma-strippers-jfk-and-stalin/

Now you see, the reason why I can't take Oxford comma fundy-mentalists seriously is because they keep inventing examples that would be wrong under a comma-optional style. "I invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin" would require actually reading the sentence, and either adding a comma or changing the order of the list to reduce any ambiguity.

And for the sake of complete disclosure, the house style where I work is comma-mandatory. But, I have just enough sanity to recognize it as a stylistic convention, along with avoidance of double-negatives and passive speech.

SA (OP? idek - I'm the Oxford comma anon)

I do agree with you on the whole rtfm bit, but regardless, I like how Oxford commas look. When a sentence doesn't have one, I get the damn willies. Very rarely does the lack actually interfere with the sense of the sentence, tbh. Sure, I can recognize that they aren't strictly necessary and that rules are flexible, etc., it's just that Oxford commas are just so damn pretty :-)

/I have a reason
//Even if it's a stupid reason

Ha, until very recently -- like, inside the last couple years recently -- I thought lack of the Oxford comma was wrong. I swear I remember being taught that the final comma (didn't even have a name for it) was always the way to go.

This isn't quite what you're looking for, but I always get uncomfortable when I see "hopefully" used to mean "I hope" even though the Oxford English dictionary now accepts that definition and I should really lighten up anyway.

I don't but I honestly pity* people who are like that who have to read my posts. I know I'm grammatically incorrect most of the time. I do it on purpose to be similar to how I speak in real life. Sooooo... sorry people.

*Nothing but sincerity.

I remember one of mine now: when people put a space after their ellipses. So there you go :P

Interesting. I was taught to use it that way depending upon where one was trailing off from or into something.

But yeah, I will never be grammatically correct here.

That's funny, because I really hate it when people don't put spaces after ellipses.

(No hard feelings?)

Not really grammar exactly but there are certain words people use that I hate. Dapper is one of them.

The phrase 'little did they know' always feels extremely wrong to me, even though I know it's grammatically correct.

"An" + H-word where the H is (at least to me) not silent. I know it's a dialect thing, but I cringe when I see constructs like "an horrible tragedy" or "an hilarious incident" in writing.

I have so much hate for that! You wouldn't say it out loud, why would you write it that way? Come on, people!

So long as you're okay with it when the h is silent in someone's dialect. I once had someone "correct" the title of a presentation I was giving from "An Historical Blah Blah" to "A Historical Blah Blah" at a conference.

I don't pronounce the "h" in that word, you ignorant yankee fuckbag! When I went up to the organizer to "correct" it back to the original word usage, she actually suggested that I "pronounce it the 'normal' way" because my way was "pretentious". Ohhhhhh myyyyyy goooooood.

I really, really hate it when people use two spaces after a period. A co-worker once gave me a document that I had to edit into a larger document and I went through the entire thing on my own time to remove all of the double spaces.

Re: Weird grammarish things you're picky about

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, same here. The MLA and the Chicago Manual of Style says to use one space after a period, so using two spaces isn't even right.

Re: Weird grammarish things you're picky about

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
2 spaces after a period was standard before the internet.

Re: Weird grammarish things you're picky about

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
One space was always standard for printed material. Pick up a book printed before the internet and there will be one space after each period. People only started adding a second space because the fonts used by typewriters made everything look weird without an extra space. We don't use those fonts anymore.
