PSA to Pokemon fans

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Pokemon fans, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL if you don't want to be spoiled for XY! A whole stack of stores have broken the street date, and there are people with copies already. We haven't seen any real plot-related stuff, but there's been a ton of new Pokemon (and MegaEvolutions), including the final evolutions of all three starters.

Actually wondering how seriously Nintendo is going to respond to this. If they can track which stores broke the street date, I can't help but wonder if they might try to take out lawsuits. It certainly puts doubt on whether there'll ever be another worldwide simultaneous release :(

I don't think they can hit them with lawsuits. Fines maybe, and repercussions (like not allowing them to sell Nintendo stuff), but only if they can actually verify that the store broke street date. I imagine it's not that easy, either - here in Canada, independent/mom and pop stores do it way more often than, say, ann EB Games would.

The simultaneous release isn't even the problem - why do stores have the games over two weeks early? No wonder some stores broke street date...

They've apparently been tracking down the places that have broken the street dates and giving them some sort of repercussions and they've been *trying* to contain the leaks by taking down the leakers' posting area but haven't had much luck as they've been fairly widespread. They can't take charges against people who have bought games at places where the street dates have been broken, because they haven't done anything wrong. Some reviewers have apparently also gotten repercussions because they've leaked news.

A digital-only release would be a lot more feasible if they don't want leaks next release, but it's gonna be a lot more than a year before digital-only is standard.

They'd have to take down the entirety of 4chan to stop it, honestly. And even if they closed /vp/, people would still flock to /v/ and stuff.

Just looking at the /vp/ front page right now, out of fifteen posts, ten show leaks. ...And oh wow, that one actually was true. Huh. Strange.

you're only finding out about the leaks now? sloooww.

dont' worry there's surprisingly little info about what actually story related, its just people trying to find new pokemon

maybe 10 new pokemon found tops

No, I've been following them since they first broke, with that one guy's Instagram. Just posting it now, since people are really getting further into the game.

And yeah, it's not a HUGE amount, but the starters in particular are giving me a bit of pause since Nintendo explicitly asked reviewers not to reveal them until the 12th, even if the review embargo ends tomorrow. It's nothing critical, but just... I do know people want to avoid ANY spoilers.

Yeah, they've already found one dude in Canada (who apparently posted pics with his FACE, c'mon son)

this isn't going to effect future WW releases. some dozen people have got it early, out of the entire fucking world

this isn't the first game WW release and it won't be the last. It's still leak friendlier than staggered releases. relax
