I'll add to this that "real" writers can tend to be self-critical ragequitters who never finish a damn thing

The output of both groups can surprise you, basically. :P

Can't agree. If you never finish a damn thing, you do not get to call yourself a "real writer." You are playing at writing. There's a difference.
starphotographs: This field is just more space for me to ramble and will never be used correctly. I am okay with this! (Ginko (default))

Eh, I guess that was hyperbole. The basic point was that there are people who can't really write who crank out page after page of crap, and people who can who finish far fewer things than they start.

...Which isn't much of a point, really. :P Carry on.

Just finish something, some of the time, and put it out there. that's all I ask.

What are you, like, the emminece on who is or isn't a writer? like, are you god?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Finishing the occasional piece of writing is a pretty minimal standard, OP.

That wasn't what nonny asked tho, nice sidestepping there Writer God.

Alright, let's put it this way:

Saying that you don't have much of a right to call yourself a writer if you never finish anything ever is not presuming to be "the emminece on who is or isn't a writer," or some sort of Writer God. That's because finishing something, sometimes is such a pathetically low place to set the bar. How the fuck do you call yourself a writer if you never finish your work? Answer me that.

Also, there's no such word as "emminece." Were you trying to say "eminence"? How cute.

I would call myself a writer simply because I sometimes write stuff. The fact that I am not good at finishing stuff I start writing means I consider myself not a good writer.

Being someone who has seen writers whose work is not bad but they seem to never be able to finish anything before they wander off to write a newer idea... I agree with you.

Also, the main reason I almost never write is that I know I am exactly that sort of person.

ayrt

This is why I don't call myself a writer.
