My money would be on him liking it. He was known for being pretty big on advancing/being excited about new stuff in animation, iirc.

I thought I heard about him being unhappy with the Xerox process (it made things more sketchy and less flowingly beautiful), but I could be wrong about that. I' not even sure he was still alive when it was introduced.

But yeah overall I think he was one to appreciate new ways to do animation and give everything a real try.

No, he was big on advancing filming techniques. He had no tolerance for anything other than 100% hand drawn animation.

As far as I know, he was mostly just opposed to people copying frames instead of individually drawing each one - he thought the look of copied-then-adjusted frames didn't look as good as drawing each frame from scratch. While this type of animation looks better, the major downside is its inefficiency. Things like digital and 3D animation didn't really exist back then.

Considering the nature of animation, I think he'd be quite in favor of it as it's the best of both worlds, especially 3D animation. He opposed the copying method because of the details that could/would get lost that way, but 3D animation is dependent on effectively establishing a model and then manipulating it, giving you the (relative) efficiency of not needing to constantly create scenes/frames from scratch, while still preserving and even enhancing the detail put into each model/image/frame.

Walt was all about advancing animation and finding new ways to tell stories. Who knows what he'd think of the movies themselves, but he would be playing with every new technology he could get his hands on like a kid in a sandbox.

Did you straight up take this from WDC or did you cleverly edit it to look like one of their confessions.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering the same thing.

I thought it looked familiar.

Walt would be a bit annoyed at being surrounded by so many minorities and facial hairs

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Walt was pretty progressive...for his time.

Okay, maybe.

He'd really hate all the beards.

Frankly I think he'd be too busy freaking out over the hiring of openly gay people for projects (hellooooo Nathan Lane), or else there'd be something like "This fellow who was involved with Hercules has a nice art style. Gerald Scarfe, you say? Well, what else has he-- SWEET. BABY. JESUS."

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
God, I love Gerald Scarfe.

I think he'd be to busy rolling around in his piles of money and riding rides in Disney World to care.

Hahaha, this!

For some reason, I immediately thought of Walt from Breaking Bad.
So I was really confused.
But now I want to think about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
He would have fucking pioneered it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think he'd stick to traditional animation, or at least not movies like the new ones. The current Disney movies lack the atmosphere of the old ones, imo.

Yeah, I like some of the new ones, but even disregarding the traditional animation vs. CGI argument, they're very stylistically different from the old ones. It's possible that he might've eventually wanted a change in style anyway, but who knows.

I think he would have experimented with any technology to make a beautiful movie. And if CGI is done well it can be very beautiful.

Walt was all about innovation and technology and advancement. He would be ALL OVER it. In fact I'd wager that we would have had a CGI film before 1995 if Walt had still been around.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I think he be for it, as long as 2D didn't completely die out.

That said, he had decided to focus more and more of his energy into the parks, and was (or did, can't remember) going to let his son-in-law have a major hand in running the studios for him.
