[Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Phil Coulson]

He is flat but that's kinda what appeals to me about him. Like his only superpower is normalcy. Normalcy and willpower. (and casting/finding talent)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds boring as fuck.

[personal profile] hwc 2013-10-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I said it before, but so far his flatness/plainess doesn't work for me in the show. In the movies, yes, because there he his blandness played off the strong personalities of the other characters, but in AoS most of the other characters (or maybe it's the actors, I don't know) don't have the necessary spark for Coulson to work off on. Coulson's intentional blandness just falls flat when interacting with unintentionally bland characters. The two times in the show so far that Coulson worked for me was when interacting with May in episode two and the very last scene of the episode - when he interacted with characters who actually have a presence.

He worked in the movies with all the colorful superheroes and superspies, but sofar I just find him disappointing in the show. :/

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm concerned about a whole show about him. If it keeps the focus off him I think it'll do alright, but there's only been two episodes. He's supposed to blend into the background around all the superheroes. When he's leading a whole team of the bland guys it makes it hard.

You called it.

Is there a meta-category for "Be Careful What You Wish For?" on TV tropes? Because this totally belongs there. Sometimes Ensemble Darkhorses are Ensemble Darkhorses BECAUSE they don't get much attention.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
the writing for this show in general has been flat and boring so far

Regrettably true.

I really wanted to like this show.

The show needs more Fury or Maria Hill. His character works better when Coulson is following orders instead of giving them.

I still think this isn't real Coulson tho. Like he's clone Coulson or super powered bionic Coulson. There have been too many Tahiti references.

[personal profile] hwc 2013-10-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Tahiti references are really suspicious. I'm starting to subscribe to the LMD theory. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Not only is he flat and pretty boring, but I no longer think the actor himself is very good. He's best suited for two minute scenes where he can be the normal guy amongst the superheroes. Frankly, I'm completely uninterested in his "mysterious" resurrection storyline.

Then you need to see "Much Ado About Nothing," in which Clark Gregg is awesome.

I don't find him flat, but man, everyone else in the show sure is. I just want The Maria Hill and Phil Coulson Hour please, and get your Whedon-archetypes out of my show. :/

You don't have to like him. :) A lot of people don't, so no harm, no foul OP.

That's fine. One of the beauties of life is that different people can like different things.

I'd be interested in knowing if that is what you ended up thinking, though.

I didn't have a big opinion about him one way or another in the films, but I think he's the best thing about the show so far, not that that necessarily means much. I actually think it was a wise choice to have him anchor the show.

Well, he isn't as flat in the show as he is in the movies, so maybe that's something? Eh, there seems to be a lot going on that we're only barely scratching the surface of, so I'm willing to keep watching and wait for things to come forth.

Then again, I'm one of those people who finds a lot of the writing's suckiness kind of endearing in it's own way. *shrugs*

THE 90'S CALLED AND WANT THEIR WRITING BACK, BUT THEY CAN'T HAVE IT! :P

IMHO, Coulson worked better as a bland, everyday man who just happened to be Shield agent. He's not doing it for me as the star of his own show.

Hey look, someone else says "de"! (Yes, that' really what I took from this...)

Ahem, yea. Back to the secret, glad it was better than you expected, hon. He is kinda flat, isn't he? It's cute in the movies, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the show.

Honestly, though, I'm just really excited about the "de".

I really want to like it, but alllll of the characters annoy me. I love Coulson, but I'm also worried this is going to be overkill on his character, and given that he's the only one I can stand right now, I'm not holding out much hope that I'll keep watching this. :( :(

Everybody in the show is flat

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol my thoughts exactly. Not strong enough to carry his own show but great enough as a minor character.
