Physical illness from mental/emotional stimuli

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
In fiction, people faint from surprise or vomit from disgust all the time. Neither has ever happened to me, and I wouldn't consider myself to have a particularly strong constitution in general. What experience have people had with this?

It *can* happen - but it has to be a very, very, very strong emotion. Like...overwhelmingly strong. So it's also not particularly related to constitution.

I threw up from like...being too excited/nervous once when I was a 11ish. My mom was visiting us (my parents divorced when I was little), and an hour before she came I was so excited/nervous that I just threw up.

I've fainted a number of times, usually because I've been ill. I fainted once due to an accident I had, and almost fainted once due to a vitriolic email I received. So, yeah, I can believe someone fainting from surprise.

When my dog was very sick, we had to take him to the vet and learn how to give him some kind of shot (I think it was saline? don't remember). And when the vet was explaining the process and my mom was about to try it out, I almost passed out for real. Like, the vet saw me go totally pale and if she hadn't made me sit down I probably would've.

It's not even the first time something like that has happened to me, though I can't atm remember the exact circumstances. I've felt close to throwing up during certain public speaking things (like, that bile in the back of the throat moment), but it's never actually come up. I'd buy it, though.

I've wondered the same. The only times I've seen anyone faint were back in school (ages 8-11), when we'd have to stand around at some gathering or other for a long while, and someone would faint if they didn't remember to move their feet occasionally. But I've seen people vomit when they were nervous or had smelled something disgusting.

I've felt faint when particularly anxious or worried but I've never actually passed out because of it.

And I've only vomited when sick and that's only happened a couple times; guess I've been lucky.

I once got physically nauseous and dizzy when confronting a friend about a disagreement over something they said. It reminded me that I'm really bad about being a people pleaser and need to not get so upset over the thought that someone might yell at or hate me.

I'm a musician and when I was younger/less experienced with dealing with performance anxiety I fainted onstage once. I also know people who vomited before performances in their youths. Massive doses of adrenaline can definitely fuck you up, and if you don't understand that what's happening to your body is normal it can create a vicious cycle of feeling ill/freaking out about feeling ill/ feeling worse and hyperventilating because you're freaking out etc. The good news is, it's possible to practice and get better at dealing with it, and there's an entire domain of sports psychology dedicated to teaching people how to control their physical responses to emotional stimulus.

Also, in the kind of historical fiction where ladies faint at the drop of a hat, it's likely that that would have actually happened irl because they were wearing really tight corsets and thus delicate and prone to shallow breathing anyway.

I have vomited from severe pain before. I also am a sympathy vomiter, so I vomit if other people vomit. I've also thrown up from disgusting smells.

I have never fainted before. I thought I was going to once the first time I was pregnant but the dizziness passed.

Also, my husband used to faint with shots and bloodwork. He doesn't anymore because of being very sick; the exposure got him used to it. But when we got our blood drawn to get married, he had to sit with his head down between his knees for like fifteen minutes.

When I was about 10 or 11 I once fainted from not eating and then having to stand for a long time during choir, this was a regular occurence during concerts, like we had about one to three people every time, almost always different people.

I have also a fear of needles and since my cancer treatment (being in and out of the hospital for about 2 years and seeing lots and lots of all kinds of fluids going in and out of you) some years ago I faint almost any time I have to give blood and start panicking and hyperventilating. I also have a lot more issues with 'sympathy pain', as in hearing stories about body horror or watching medical dramas will make me clench up in remembered pain.

On the other hand I think it's more a case of trauma/phobia related stuff than mere 'emotional sickness'.

I've only come close to vomiting like that twice, without ever actually having it happen. Once from seeing a relative with an exploded hemorrhoid that was spraying blood all over the bathroom, and once from watching a movie with a graphic scene of a hunger striker being force fed in a 19th century prison.

I constantly feel on the verge of gagging under even minor stress, but I have health problems making it considerably worse than most people have it. :P

I've had anxiety attacks and stress headaches. I get ill and retch when something really terrible happens. This only really happened when my parents were in the ER and after my mom died.

While watching a video in sociology there was a part where these kids were expecting their dad to build their train set they got for Christmas, and while he assured them he would he didn't. They got so upset after crying and screaming for a little while one of them threw up all over his bed.

I've almost passed out once, but that was due to giving blood and not an emotional response. I have come close to throwing up from seeing disgusting things.

I threw up once from crying too much. I'm not sure how much of that was from the sheer emotion and how much was swallowing tears, not being able to breathe, fighting to stop, etc.

Once in my life, I have flinched when interacting with someone who stresses me out more than words. Involuntary flinch. It was kind of like my whole body suddenly jumped about a half-inch. Really weird.

I shake when I am in an argument. Full on, head to toe trembles. And I feel cold.

I have never barfed or fainted from psychological causes, though.

I have to be physically ill/manipulated (i.e. gag reflex triggered) to throw up, thoughts or emotions don't do it, even if something really really freaks me out. I've been pretty thankful for that, because I have an extreme disgust of insects and tossing in vomiting along with the terror and shaking wouldn't be pleasant.

I have almost thrown up at the sight of gore, but I was eating at the time and it was in a movie that I wasn't expecting it from.

Also, when I am feeling anxious, I get pretty nauseous.

I'm really squeamish about other people's bodily fluids. I can't count the times I've retched after being exposed to a drippy, leaky baby.

I throw up from stress/anxiety pretty easily.

I've nearly passed out from emotional stress, if that counts? Only reason I didn't is because I found something to sit down on, but I nearly collapsed on my way there.

Wasn't even something super serious. I mean it was all about if I get my welfare for the next month to pay rent and food and everything, but not like someone dying or whatever.
