That definition was developed by a white academic who goes around getting paid big bucks as a corporate consultant.

So...

(Also I don't think you're getting the joke)

Who developed it? Completely out of curiosity, I'm not trying to start anything. :3

Her name is Pat Bidol. It came out in a book called "Developing New Perspectives on Race," published in 1970.

Honestly, the problem isn't the definition itself, though I think it's too limited; the problem is that idiots treat it like scripture. Academic work doesn't work that way. There is no one definition for anything. On top of that, they use that definition as a bludgeon with no nuance. It exists to tell upset white kids that what they experienced wasn't racism, apparently under the presumption that people being assholes aren't really being assholes if it isn't "racism." This ultimately boils down to them saying they are allowed to be assholes because they are threatened (on tumblr, or on their college campus; this shit never seems to get trucked out by people who experience much hardship).

This is particularly hilarious when they are talking about how much they hate white women while they use the words of a white woman. But it's okay, because the color of their skin means we should let them be assholes without saying anything. That isn't racist at all.

As an Arab American I often get lumped in under the POC label so this stuff is kind of personal to me.

That was a very enlightened and educational post (I'm serious, not being sarcastic).

Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for posting this. First because even though I'd seen this definition floated around a lot, I'd never bothered to source it (and no one else in the discussions did either); and second because what you wrote is *exactly* the problem I have with the definition.

Also, for some reason I thought you were either British or SE Asian? Dunno where that came from.

Great post. I didn't know this history to the definition, and you've given me a new perspective on the issue, so... thank you!

Never even mind that the US-American definition of "race" is not absolute or scientific, and often unhelpful in discussing the situation in other countries~
