Dude, that kind of nihilism is SO 1980s.

A perfect moment for wisdom from The Church of The Dude:

To baffle the alien archaeologists who come to investigate the dead planet.

something for the aliens/robots/future species to read

This made me laugh for about 5 minutes straight, so I thank you for that providing that brief moment of hilarity in these dark, melodramatic times.

Also, write for the NOW, not for the future. If you think the world's about to end, then spend your time doing something you like, even if you never get to finish it or one no one ever sees it.

I always liked the Martin Luther take on that sort of attitude (which you don't have to agree with him on anything else to appreciate):

"If I knew the world would end tomorrow, I would still plant my apple tree today."

OP: Clarification

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so I just realized my secret is a little unclear. It's supposed to be about neglecting my original fiction in favor of instant-gratification fanfic.

Re: OP: Clarification

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, we're not going to destroy ourselves. We're like cockroaches. Even if we kill off a big chunk of the population, there will be plenty left to survive and propagate the species.

At which point maybe your original writing will be a lot more important and relevant to other people than fanfic, who knows.

The day you realize you've wasted your life based on your paranoia.

will be hilarious.

Let's be accurate here.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's depression and pessimism, not paranoia.

you're so narrow minded that it's not even funny anymore.

Well since humanity isn't going to wipe itself out for hundreds or thousands of years yet, you not writing your original fiction seems more like procrastination.

And from your comments, I gather you just want the quick gratification of fanfic... which has nothing to do with the world ending way after your life time.

Weeeeell, if the Cold War didn't wipe us all from the face of the planet, I'd say we're pretty safe now. Unless we're talking about Global Warming causing natural disasters, or something.

But humans are (... sadly? gladly) sturdier than cockroaches. I'm sure that even if there's a mass extinction, a few thousands of us will still survive. And then maybe one of those could find your originals, and become a fan! And memorize it to narrate it to the next generations, etc, Fahrenheit!style

I honestly think people adopt this kind of nihilism to forgive themselves for not trying to do anything difficult. Subconsciously, at least. If the OF was important enough, writing it would be its own reward. If it's not, just admit you don't care that much and keep enjoying fandom.

I don't write long original works, but my analogy would probably be starting an epic art project. And yes, I wouldn't do this if I shared your belief; because the reason I do art projects - apart from the pleasure of drawing, which I can get from small works, too - is to enhance my drawing technique, observe how my ideas work when brought into reality, and use these experiences in my future works/fantasies. This reason would be lost if the humanity was about to perish. And of course there would be no chance for the appreaciation of others, either; it is also a factor.

The problem is, I fail to see this as a likely thing to happen.

I don't know, if I thought the world was going to end in a couple of decades, I'd want to hurry and get it done rather than die wondering "what might have been".

To The Stonecutters:

Stonecutters fighting time with marble, you fore-defeated
challengers of oblivion
eat cynical earnings, knowing rock splits, records fall down,
the square-limbed Roman letters
scale in the thaws, wear in the rain. The poet as well
builds his monuments mockingly,
for man will be blotted out, the blithe earth die, the brave sun
die blind and blacken to the heart.

Yet stones have stood for a thousand years, and pained thoughts found
the honey of peace in old poems.
