Is there a Sherlock Holmes fanfic thing

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
where people make up stories based on the random cases Watson keeps mentioning offhand in other stories, but were never actually written as stories of themselves by Doyle (like "the case of the Giant Rat of Sumatra, for which the world is not yet ready"). Is it like, a common trope in that fandom?

Does this also happen in non-Sherlock Holmes fandoms, where the episodes/movies/volumes of the franchise are episodic enough that the characters can drop comments and give the impression that lots of exiting shit went down offscreen?

No that happens in pretty much all fandoms.

It's not just common in Sherlock Holmes, it's a tradition. A well-established, long-lived tradition.

Definitely happens in the Supernatural fandom. Off-hand remark by Dean about his 'five states in five days' trip or Sam saying something about 'that girl in Iowa' or whatever and bammy, you've got fodder for fic.

This has been a thing in Sherlock Holmes fandom for the past 100 years.

I recently read two Sherlock fics that did this, a funny one-shot telling the story of the giant rat of Sumatra, as mentioned in "The Sussex Vampire", and another in which the Reichenbach case from the beginning of TRF turns out to be the Conk-Singleton forgery case mentioned in "The Six Napoleons".

It comes up in different fandoms. For instance, Calvin and Hobbes had "The Noodle Incident" and "Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooey."

If you're looking for that specifically, check out the BBC's radio show 'The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'. I don't have a direct link, but it was written by Bert Coules and stars Clive Merrison and Andrew Sachs. It's exactly that, and I thought it was brilliantly done.
