Wait, aren't the readers on FF.net the ones who comment with UPDATE PLZ and demands about how a story should continue? I'm sorry you got a few readers who don't understand the warnings system though... the warnings tags should be closer to the content tags IMO. That's where people are used to checking for things they'd rather not read.

I was thinking this exact thing. I mean, the reason I left FF.net was half because of the format and half because the reviewers were obnoxious.

That's not getting into the reviewers who have some... anger issues. I think I'd rather take 100+ kudos and no reviews than people demanding updates and getting really verbally violent about it, imo. =T

That's been my experience of ff.net. All of the rudest comments I've ever gotten - including a couple of "friendly" threats to rape a fic out of me and someone who disliked a chapter and demanded that I erase it and start over or they'll stop reading (and dude, the fic had several thousand reviews, I don't need one reader that badly) - have come from ff.net. Also, the weird "Your fic is obviously going to be X/Y! It has to be X/Y! That would make your fic so perfect! X/Y FOREVER!" or "IF THIS FIC IS X/Y I'LL STOP READING! I SWEAR I WILL!", regardless of what I've marked the pairing as... and even if I've said that it'll be gen and thus have no pairing.

Tagging on AO3, which I'm by no means a pro at, seems to be taken more seriously by readers. No one seems confused about the pairing or characters I've marked on AO3 and the comments, while much fewer, are always on topic and never horrific. The kudos system, while sometimes unfulfilling/aggrieving, cuts down on a lot of the "Good chapter. Update soon!" or "Update!" comments. All of the comments that I've gotten on AO3 showed at least a little thought had been put into them and no one has trendily threatened me with rape. (And seriously? Who thought, "I'll make rape a fun and friendly word by throwing it into casual conversation! I'm off to rape the mythology section!" Whoever that was, THEY WERE WRONG!)

The only advice that I can give to the OP is that less in more with tagging on AO3. As in, if you've got 50 content tags in addition to all of your character and pairing tags, you're doing it wrong. The readers that you want probably won't click on your fic. The tumblr-style ones are probably a good bet, though.

Oh shit you have definitely seen the worst side of ff.net. And writers actually encourage that kind of attitude there! Maybe I'm naive, but I think the norm on AO3 is that people read/review because they enjoy (or hate!) your writing, not based on whether you follow their demands.

Wow, this is so weird. I've been posting on FFnet for over ten years and have *never* gotten anything like that.

Of course, I only post in obscure fandoms with characters nobody likes anyway, so maybe that's why....

I know it depends on the fandom, but the feedback on ff.net is 10x better in my fandom than it is on ao3. I still use both though.

This. If I'm lucky then on AO3 I'll get a couple of kudos. On FFN I get way more reviews and the majority of them are fine. Besides, I'd rather have a review saying "update plz" than the radio silence I get on AO3.

Yeah, this. The best reviews I have ever gotten have all been on ffnet. I'd rather have even a paragraph that talks about my story than ten kudos.

Honestly, I think reviewing is going away in favor of kudoing and liking. I blame tumblr for this somehow.

I have one asshole commenter on AO3 who commented on every Teen Wolf fic I wrote demanding I make it Sterek. Didn't even matter if the story takes place before they were born. She wanted me to abandon my pairing and make it Sterek. And then she didn't even read my one or two actual Sterek fics.

So, no, ffnet isn't the only place with those assholes.
