Pop quiz: what does AO3 stand for?

I'll give you a moment.

With a name like that, is it any surprise that readers there would have a sense of entitlement?

HA, no. Since it's 'our own' in the sense that it's run by fic writers and fandom people who aren't going to go nutso one day and start deleting communities/journals at random one day.

I think you're fogetting the utter douchey-ness of non-fan-run sites when it comes to sudden 'think of the children!!' moments.

I honestly don't understand why AO3 is considered to be a good or easy layout for fanfic. I've always found it to be all over the place. I can never properly find the kind of fic I'm looking for, when I find that to be genuinely easy on ff.net, even if lots of it is shit.

Wait, aren't the readers on FF.net the ones who comment with UPDATE PLZ and demands about how a story should continue? I'm sorry you got a few readers who don't understand the warnings system though... the warnings tags should be closer to the content tags IMO. That's where people are used to checking for things they'd rather not read.

About those warnings

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen anyone complain about "author chose not to warn." It's people using the "no archive warnings apply" when they should be choosing the "author chose not to warn" label that pisses people off, and for good reason.

AO3 isn't pretending to be anything. It's users think it has less badfic because it has less badfic. What do you want us to say.

as a reader I love ao3 and I hate that it has such a bad reputation for writers because of a bunch of asshole readers.

funny thing is, i thought fanfiction.net was the same. i'm sure it has its share of petty readers and commenters, but I didn't know they moved and multiplied at ao3 :( that sucks because, yeah, for a reader is a pretty great site.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to keep thinking that about FF readers/users, stay away from the official update blog. Or at least don't read the comments there.

Depends on the fandom. I hate AO3 for my fandom. It's a small fandom and I feel FF.net lends itself to finding fic easier, even if more is posted there and you have to shove aside some crap.

Personally I think AO3 is okay for all fandoms but for smaller fandoms people might not find the site at all and when you limit the pool of new fic coming in on purpose I just--I can't understand it beyond big fandom mentality where you want the "better" fic easier to find by making the location almost a secret/exclusive sort of thing.

That said you have about a billion percent higher chance in my fandom to get feedback on FFN. Something about FFN just feels more, IDK, like a community in my fandom.

YMMV. Just my imput. I prefer FFN's layout and everything though I will admit you have a lot more control over how the format of your fic looks on AO3 vs. FFN. (I never do fancy shit so I don't care.)

I think AO3 is cluttered looking and I never go there to look for fic. Reading a fic is okay but there's too much...idk open space? It's weird. I just think AO3 needs a shitton of work before it's something I'll want to even use. XD;;

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
shit, son, just cross-post and take your knocks. I kinda prefer the flexibility of AO3, but FF has some advantages too (not least it's WAY easier to view on my phone)

Also for the last fiew fics I posted I have gotten about 5x as much response on ff as ao3, and that's including kudos as response. A lot of times the fandom you post in will change your experience of either archive.

ngl i kind of hate AO3 because it's full of crossovers and AUs and the weird way in which people tag their stuff. It's frustrating wanting to find fic for small fandoms and only finding Sherlock/Teen Wolf/Supernatural fic. Same with fic about minor characters, they are tagged in fics even when they are not the focus of the story.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I actually stopped posting to AO3 because nobody was reading anything I posted. Went back to FFN, where I get plenty of feedback. Of course, that probably means "oh your work is shit and not good enough for the readers on AO3 then" but hey, it's making people happy on FFN and if I write fic that entertains more people than myself I pretty much count it as a win. *shrug*

I cannot speak as a writer, since I have never posted anything to AO3, though I don't mind commenting as a reader.

I am... not a huge user of Ao3's search function. I do like the tags, if I'm wanting fics by pairing, and I find the hodge-podge tags for anything and everything in the fic some people put up to be amusing.

I like FFN's search function, even if I don't like the recent upgrade that turned it into a pop-up. The character A/character B sorting is slightly hit-and-miss since it covers anything that has been labelled with those two characters, whether it be het, slash, gen, hatefic, rapefic, friendship, etc, but the rest is something that has to winnowed out by going through the listings and reading summaries anyway. However that factor has been that way forever anyway, so I'm used to it.

I like commenting on AO3 better. It feels more community-like when one is allowed to have threads of discussion out in the open so other people can offer opinions. FFN feels like discussions are a dirty secret to be hidden in PMs.

Both sites have their positives and negatives. AO3 will likely gain more negatives as it grows, but frankly I don't have huge faith in FFN growing hugely more positive at this point because it has shown a long history of just how it handles things and I don't expect it to change any time soon, unless the site gets sold off to Big Business, at which time I will believe it would go down the proverbial gurgler.

Your preferences are your preferences. If you like FFN better, that's your prerogative. Just don't call anyone names for liking AO3 better (though I won't have too much problem if you call them an ass if they call you names for liking FFN).
