AO3 isn't pretending to be anything. It's users think it has less badfic because it has less badfic. What do you want us to say.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It had less badfic.

Now it's evening/evened out~

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure it is.

Don't believe him? look at the supernatural/sherlock/teen wolf tags for a start

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man. I was thinking about reading TW fic but when I went to the main tag page (or w/e), the first 30 I opened were really, really terrible. There were 3 good ones but geez.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It only used to have greater quality because there were fewer people using it.

I'd say it's still superior, but that's just because it's still significantly smaller. There's nothing inherent in the site that makes it better than FF.Net imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Also, quality really depends on fandom, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in some fandoms, it's pretty much nothing BUT badfic. That being said, I used to read anime fic on FF.net so I know neither is a pile of pure gold (there's a bunch of crap in there too).

I agree, but I feel like I can see the average quality very gradually going down. I'm coming across more sloppily written fics than I would have about a year ago.

Depends how you define badfic. I'd agree that SPaG tends to be better on AO3. However, as far as I'm concerned, AUs where characters don't have the slightest resemblance to their canon selves aren't any more readable or enjoyable than some sugar high Mary Sue fic. I'm a slash fan, but most of the stuff I come across on AO3 seems to feature generic copy-and-paste any-two-guys characterisation.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
+1. AO3 had/has better average SPAG but the fic has always been just as bad.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It has less badfic because it has less fic. That's it. Just because the badfic is hipster AU/indie songfic/bizarro kinks instead of self-inserts doesn't mean it isn't there. Your heads are all just so far up your self-congratulatory asses that you don't realize it.

FF.net has more badifc numbers-wise, but I think AO3 has more 'stealth badfic' than ff.net. On ff.net, there's a ton of Mary Sues and I WROTE THIS ON SUGAR GUYZ LOLSORANDOM badfic, but you can usually tell right away which ones those are. AO3 has plenty of fic that looks good, good grammar, good grasp of writing, but the characters are less their actual canon selves and instead are full-on fanon 'this is what Tumblr wishes they were like' personalities. It's still badfic, it's just less easy to spot it straight out and pass over it. And frankly, I prefer ff.net's badfic approach. At least on ff.net the badfic writers are mostly teenagers who will hopefully grow out of it, while at AO3 the badfic writers are older and will likely just continue to move from coffeeshop AU to coffeeshop AU.

Yeah, I agree with this assessment. Both places have badfic -there's no question about that-, but the type of badfic is the major difference. (Even then, 'badfic' is still a fairly subjective term: a A/B/O coffeeshop AU starring wing!Sherlock and elf!Dean may be badfic to some, but to another, it's the best thing since cream gravy. Trash, treasure, et all)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all good and well. People should be able to enjoy whatever fic they want. I know I've probably enjoyed some fics that others would classify as 'badfic'

I think the problem comes when the people who like the "A/B/O coffee shop AU starring wing!Sherlock and elf!Dean" think they're oh so superior to those "stupid fangirls" that like OC 'Mary-Sue' fics.
I used to have that attitude a long time ago and but have since gotten over myself (thankfully).

ayrt

This is one of those things where your fandom and fic preferences change your POV dramatically, I think.
I've seen a lot of OOC fanfic by teenagers on AO3 and I think there are plenty of adults on ff.net who have more interest in churning out chapters than improving their style, but you have a point about stealth badfic being more upsetting. It's interesting to hear how passionately people hate OOC stuff over fic that's technically lacking....

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not it doesn't, but I still like it better.

(All the tumblr people are posting there now.)
