FF.net has more badifc numbers-wise, but I think AO3 has more 'stealth badfic' than ff.net. On ff.net, there's a ton of Mary Sues and I WROTE THIS ON SUGAR GUYZ LOLSORANDOM badfic, but you can usually tell right away which ones those are. AO3 has plenty of fic that looks good, good grammar, good grasp of writing, but the characters are less their actual canon selves and instead are full-on fanon 'this is what Tumblr wishes they were like' personalities. It's still badfic, it's just less easy to spot it straight out and pass over it. And frankly, I prefer ff.net's badfic approach. At least on ff.net the badfic writers are mostly teenagers who will hopefully grow out of it, while at AO3 the badfic writers are older and will likely just continue to move from coffeeshop AU to coffeeshop AU.

Yeah, I agree with this assessment. Both places have badfic -there's no question about that-, but the type of badfic is the major difference. (Even then, 'badfic' is still a fairly subjective term: a A/B/O coffeeshop AU starring wing!Sherlock and elf!Dean may be badfic to some, but to another, it's the best thing since cream gravy. Trash, treasure, et all)

That's all good and well. People should be able to enjoy whatever fic they want. I know I've probably enjoyed some fics that others would classify as 'badfic'

I think the problem comes when the people who like the "A/B/O coffee shop AU starring wing!Sherlock and elf!Dean" think they're oh so superior to those "stupid fangirls" that like OC 'Mary-Sue' fics.
I used to have that attitude a long time ago and but have since gotten over myself (thankfully).

This is one of those things where your fandom and fic preferences change your POV dramatically, I think.
I've seen a lot of OOC fanfic by teenagers on AO3 and I think there are plenty of adults on ff.net who have more interest in churning out chapters than improving their style, but you have a point about stealth badfic being more upsetting. It's interesting to hear how passionately people hate OOC stuff over fic that's technically lacking....
