I have no idea

AO3 was shocked when she pulled away from their passionate kiss to see tears streaming down FFN's face.

"What's wrong?" AO3 asked.

"I'm sorry, AO3, but..." FFN looked down between them, tears starting to fall to the floor. "I don't have a tagging function! I don't know if we can be together!"

"It's okay, FFN - I have enough tags for the both of us," AO3 said. "One of the few advantages of being friends with Tumblr."

"We don't even have a signifant user overlap," FFN said. But she was already warming up to AO3's logic, pressing her face into AO3's neck, smiling as the short ends of AO3's hair tickled her nose.

AO3 rang her fingers through FFN's long and obnoxiously colored hair and down her back, nails catching on the lace get up. FFN always looked a little ridiculous and she kind of loved her for it anyway.

"So what? It's not like either of use will run out of fans anytime soon," she said. "Now, how about we get back to the kissing? It's either that or we tell Tumblr we're finally together."

FFN started to smirk slightly, a twist in her lips AO3 could feel in the hypersensitized skin of her neck.

"Why not both?" FFN asked, and AO3 laughed and kissed her again.

Those are the worst kind of people.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, that's not nearly as bad as people who tag twenty pairings aside from the main one, plus every single character who is mentioned or makes a brief appearance.

I don't understand why people tag characters. Pairings maybe, because there are pairings that squick people out, but every character? Whyyyy.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
becuse I want to read about That character, and will read anything.

If the character plays a major role in the story, or is in at least a good part of it, I'd like them to be tagged because sometimes I do want to read about a particular character. If the character just has a bare mention or a couple lines, though, I agree that it's pretty ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite character is very minor. Most of the fics under his tag are canon-novelizations in which he appears for, oh, maybe a sentence or two as the author gets his canon scenes out of the way, or even summarizes them as they happen offscreen.

In one fic where he's tagged, he does not actually appear at all but is mentioned in passing as part of a joke.

Yeah, I mad.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
+1 motherfucking million

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
fucking SAME. I hate people who tag like that so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
The amount of idiots who just don't understand how to use tags and what are their actual function is baffling.

Homg, i despise that kind of idiocy.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

I think this is a fandom problem though, not an archive problem. i don't think hp complain so much about the tagging, do they?

Aw, man. You got my hopes up. I would love to wrangle 'tag wranglers can suck my dick'. But it doesn't exist. Alas. :p

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck people, what's the problem with you? Commenting like this on Tumblr I can understand (it's your blog, it's your goddamn business if you suck at tagging), but tagging on an ARCHIVE has a function: namely, organization and retrieval of stories.
Tagging is a tool to help your story be found more easily and accurately by the exact kind of people you want to read it. So, you have an Alice/Bob story? You tag it: Alice, Bob, the name of your ship, and your genre (romance, drama, angst, hurt/comfort, etc.), maybe a warning if needed. That's it, all the information your readers need.
For the love of god don't tag Alice's aunt who has like two lines around chapter 15. It's about your main characters; if you tag a minor character you're implying said story is about them, which is not the case, and the only thing you're accomplishing with that is pissing actual fans of said character and wasting people's time reading something they are not interesting in (or are you trying to change their minds? Well, your writing better be stellar if that's what you're trying to do).
So, in a nutshell: only tag things that ARE IMPORTANT to your story. Save your comments for your author's notes/blog. You'll look cooler and attract better readers that way.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Context: I wrote a chapter of a fic where a popular supporting character died offscreen, and got comment after comment calling me hateful for not tagging it as "Major Character Death" because people could be triggered by a character dying offscreen.

Nevermind that I had hit the "Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings" option.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, it sounded more to me like one of the authors who doesn't tag, and is getting shit for not tagging/warning. While I wouldn't have been so hostile, I do agree that, if you read a work labelled 'author has chosen not to use archive warnings', you should consider that a valid warning for any squicks and triggers you may have, and avoid the work accordingly if need be.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
...or what the OP said directly above me. Long subthread is long.
