have you ever had a series that...

captured something about your attention or inspiration but the story itself has a lot of flaws in how it was carried out.

When I first started the Charlie Bone / Children of the Red King series, the concept of a school that combined fantasy elements with the fine arts really captured my imagination. After reading part of the first book I started a handwritten fanfiction when I was about thirteen. The story , the names the whole Fine Arts School etc just excited me so much.(Billy Raven, Olivia Vertigo .....just dude...I was like "was this written for me?)

I read through the series and somewhat enjoyed it, but as time went on I started to see the flaws in it, some of the villains seemed really flat and just "mwahahaha evil" and as time went on it seemed that the protagonist became more and more of a Black Hole Sue. (magically endowed by his super great grandaddy the magician king was okay enough, though his 'endowment' started to become OP , and then when he turned out to be related to welsh wizard on his mom's side it was like "...whut")

It's a shame, really, because the beginning was while not great, an interesting read. *sighs*. I would love using the idea of a school that combines fantasy and fine arts in an original way (with a varied cast of characters and more complex, slightly grey villains) but I fear that I would be accused of writing a rip off. I just want to write what I wish had existed when I was a kid.

I find the lore and worldbuilding (ok and the art) of Naruto really interesting/appealing, but I just can't with the story.

I've mentioned this one before but the book "Stardoc." The idea of medical care in science fiction has always fascinated me and the idea of xenophobia against aliens can go all kinds of interesting places, as can alien/human romance and sex.

But the book just sucked and I don't know how I even finished it.

(I have similar feelings regarding the manga Uzumaki. When I first heard about it it sounded subtle and horrific but when I read the first volume it just... didn't go anywhere I liked and seemed to hit the reader over the head with everything. People still praise it, but I just could not get into it. I still wish there were a manga out there that had the themes I thought it had.)

Harry Potter. The stories had a lot of great characters and fun ideas, but JKR's storytelling and world-building both leave something to be desired. And they got worse rather than better as they went along. I started to lose interest after Book 5 and really only finished the series for the sake of completeness.

Dragonriders of Pern. Absolutely fantastic worldbuilding! Horribly homophobic and sexist overtones. For the time it was amazingly progressive, but alas, that time WAS the 70s, so by today's standards it is.... yeah.
