I've mentioned this one before but the book "Stardoc." The idea of medical care in science fiction has always fascinated me and the idea of xenophobia against aliens can go all kinds of interesting places, as can alien/human romance and sex.

But the book just sucked and I don't know how I even finished it.

(I have similar feelings regarding the manga Uzumaki. When I first heard about it it sounded subtle and horrific but when I read the first volume it just... didn't go anywhere I liked and seemed to hit the reader over the head with everything. People still praise it, but I just could not get into it. I still wish there were a manga out there that had the themes I thought it had.)
