I really don't like the way Sinead has repeatedly said Miley is acting like a prostitute and her producers are pimps.
I'm not pro-Miley, I just think she should be able to make terrible fashion choices and life decisions without both the feminists AND the misogynist dudebros calling her a whore and a slut...

Yea, I didn't like the references to prostitution either; I thought that was a bit heavy handed. And Miley annoys me a great deal these days, but her choices are still her own and I'm mostly beyond caring about this mess.

Yeah, I don't like her choice of words in the letter that much, but I think people have to remember that this situation is different from regular people. Miley's every action becomes highly publicized. It's not about being a role model, because it's not her responsibility to teach young girls how to act, but it is about how this will follow her for the rest of her life. Her choices now aren't just a phase, they'll be brought up no matter what she does.

It's like the difference between young people wanting to experiment sexually in private, vs. doing it on camera for porn. While both can legitimately be just someone's desire to explore and have fun in their own way, one will stay private (usually) while the other will be rather permanent. So it's not bad advice to tell a young woman thinking of getting into porn to think veeery carefully about her choices and to imagine all possible consequences.

So in a way I don't really see it as slut-shaming... because as she says in the letter, her body is her own and she can do whatever she wants, just best to keep it more private because she's only 20 and she may not want these actions to last forever, and the industry really does try to sell women's bodies in a way, and it's pretty disturbing. Miley may be doing this of her own accord, but lets face it, she's also probably being nudged along in some ways because it sells.

Her body is her own, but like, if she were thinking of getting a tattoo of her boyfriend's name written across her face, it's not exactly wrong to be like "dude... rethink your choices." What she's choosing to do these days is going to follow her around for a long time.

I didn't care for the open letter, either. I thought it verged on slut shaming, if not outright. It also read as being fairly patronizing; nobody really wants to be told that their choices are really actually truly being made by other people.

However, Miley mocking Sinead's mental illness is just disgusting. There were plenty of ways that she could have responded to refute what Sinead said without being an ableist jerk.

I wonder how many of her choices really are made by other people, though. She usually sticks to a "haters gonna hate, lala not going to listen to you" approach to people calling her out on something. But her response here seems to show that Sinead hit a nerve. Like... really badly.

I mean... if it's all her choice? That's great, though I hope her friends and family are still trying to give her perspective, cause she might royally regret all this soon. But if others really are pushing her into her new "image", it's kind of disturbing and worrisome.

Given that Cyrus had said immediately before this that she saw O'Connor as an inspiration and that Wrecking Ball was an homage to Nothing Compares 2 U it's not that surprising that it would hit her personally. Nor is it surprising that saying that Wrecking Ball was an homage to Nothing Compares 2 U would take O'Connor by surprise.

Actually it seems kind of sad now - two people who in a lot of ways both seem to want to be positive towards each other, and circumstances and life and the culture and misunderstanding have now pushed them to the point where they're apparently beefing. It's a little tragic.

I...had no idea her name was spelled that way lmao. I knew of the video from that episode of I Love the 90's, and since it's pronounced 'shineigh', I had no idea there was a silent d in there. Now I think the whole wank between them is hilarious

I could see both scenarios, tbh. I'm not privy to Miley's personal life so I don't know (and I doubt any of us do). I'm not saying that Sinead may not have a point, either -- because what she's suggesting is entirely possible. But I've never met anyone who would react well to being told that their choices are not actually their choice.

(Example: Have you ever seen a discussion in regards to feminism where someone suggests that wearing high heels or wearing makeup isn't an actual choice but something that women are assumed to do by the patriarchy? And to some degree, it's true that things like makeup and high heels (esp in certain social circles and careers) are very much expected as a part of being feminine/professional feminine). If you haven't ever seen one of these discussions, they usually go poorly, with multitudes of women speaking up to say that no, it's their choice, fuck off. Which, I personally take a more middle-road approach; social expectation is a factor, but people have a right to do what they want anyway.)

I think the situation with Miley is similar in that she probably is being encouraged by her managers, etc. At the same point, from everything I can tell, she's really into it herself. Is it a smart move? Well, it depends. I'd say in her case it's not so much that sex sells as it is that controversy sells, and there's certainly enough of that. It sounds like she's into what she's doing, and doesn't care much about the possible consequences.

People seem to assume that nobody in her personal sphere are warning her about what she's doing. Judging by how much of a knee-jerk reaction she has when someone brings it up, I'd bet that it's not the first time she's heard it. I think it's a situation where she's likely going to have to crash and burn before she learns anything.

... and jeez, I wrote way too much about a celebrity that I'm not even a fan of. This whole thing with her has been on my FB feed and around LJ/DW/etc way too much, lol.

In fairness, when I've seen discussions about wearing high heels and/or make up being the result of exceptions from society, the side saying that usually comes off pretty patronizing. When that happens, no matter how right you may be, people are going to get their hackles up because that tends to rub them wrong.

As for Miley...I have no clue what this is even about. I'd heard something about a connection, but prior to this post I didn't know what was going on. From what I'm reading, it *sounds* like O'Connor had good intentions and possibly even good points, but managed to word things in a way that was unfortunate [for lack of a better word], and evoked the same defensive action. I also kind of wonder if something like this was part of the cause of the rift Miley has with her father [...or, at least supposedly?].
