The reboot movies aren't Star Trek, they're what popular culture likes to think of Star Trek as. JJ Abrams himself said he didn't really like Star Trek as a kid - while he was okay with it to make the movie, he really disliked how "slow" and philosophical it is.

He seemed to miss the fact that "slow and philosophical" was kind of the point. Star Wars was a space drama, Star Trek was a drama set in space. There is a reason why there is a lot of division between these two franchises, which in turn are entirely separate for a reason.

There's also the fact that Star Trek was never a Hero's Journey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth

It was about people who encountered extraordinary things in their job. By taking that away and making it into a Hero's Journey it removes the heart of it in a way that makes a lot of fans go "This doesn't have the same feel..." without realizing right away that it's because the entire narrative structure has changed.

I'm not sure whether to hope Abrams just ignored this narrative structural difference or if he missed it entirely. I'm not sure which possibility would be worse, either. D:
